RE: Parking permits in the GSMNP

I don't know what the solution is. The reality is things are totally different today from when the National Parks were created. People now have the ability to easily get to them and experience them. That ease creates a numbers problem.
Yes, the parks are supported by our tax dollars. Another reality is the money the parks are getting from our tax dollars is not enough to maintain the parks. There is a serious backlog of maintenance issues.
Here in SC the State Parks have to be able to sustain themselves. This has actually improved the parks. Yes you pay to get into the bigger and popular parks. Those fees also help keep the crime down.
Again, don't know the solution but something has to be done. Will be camping for a week in May near the GSMNP before school is out, so hopefully not too bad. Went to Grand Canyon last year 2 weeks after Easter hoping to miss Spring Break and had no crowd issues. I am sure COVID helped the crowd issues there last year.

RE: Switch Router Setup

Mine is setup with a modem/router then ethernet cable to second router.
Why second router? To improve signal in other portion of house.
1st router is in office at end of house and where the line comes in. It is not in a good location for WiFi. WiFi is turned off on this one. It is used for PC, work PC and security system, all which need to an ethernet connection.
2nd router is in a central location which easily supports the whole house with WiFi.

RE: Cooking surfaces and tools, What's your favorite to use!

I know that I'm in the minority, but I love my Cobb Grill. Cook, grill, smoke, fry, most any type of cooking you want and is very fuel, charcoal briquettes, efficient and compact.
We have one as well but use it more at home. I like the CobbleStones for fuel. Little pricey, but work much better than briquettes. When we got our Cobb Grill the CobbleStones didn't exist.

Switch Router Setup

For years my internet service input went to a switch. The switch then fed 2 routers. This has worked great for years.
I lost service yesterday and while the tech guy was here he noticed my setup and said service input should go to router, then router to switch, then switch to second router.
I would likes thoughts on this. Which is really better?

Blackstone. Whole meal can be cooked on one unit. Also have gas grills. If doing the rare thing that can't be done on the BS then would use gas grill and stove.

Son is in Basic Training. He will barely have enough time to use the latrine and basically NO free time to wander around and make phone calls.

RE: Yellowstone second thoughts.

Another thing to consider is there are going to be 3 major road projects starting this year that will cause significant travel issues within the park for two years. We were planning a trip for 2023 and am going to wait until after that now. They were originally going to do these projects one at a time and decided to all 3 at once.

RE: Locking gas cap

I had a lock cap for a truck once and lost the key. Did a little research and learned they are designed to easily bypass the lock with a simple tap with a hammer and screwdriver.

Battery On/Off Switch

I am going to install a battery on/off switch on a TT. Where would you put the actual switch? A lot of pictures I have seen they are on the plastic case the battery sits in.

RE: South Pittsburg TN

Interesting place. Looks like they are just now developing the place. The one thought that strikes me is the fact that the bathrooms are in trailers. Usually they're housed in permanent concrete structures and serve double duty as storm shelters during tornado outbreaks. That area gets tornados frequently enough I would be hesitant to camp there.
Looking at their map they do list a "future" bathhouse in the plans.

RE: Road side assistance

Poster "Joe H" :
Your post (non-reply, etc.) is exactly why I have US Rider for ERS !!
US Rider is an ERS "intended" for folks (equestrians) who have horses. It's the *only* ERS that will tow a trailer with live animals.
OK - so you don't have a horse.....I don't, but reading the coverage, it didn't seem to matter. It would cover whatever you are driving and/or towing - whether it "contained" horses (a horse trailer) or not. Likewise, it didn't matter if you had a horse or not. Simply stated, horse ownership was *not* a requirement for the services outlined in the ERS service.
Still - a bit dubious, so I sent an e-mail along to the service with question/s regarding the above. I was pleasantly surprised when I received a reply from the Administrator - as well as a letter in the US Mail....along with an invitation to call her if I desired to do so!
She explained the coverage - the only "caveat" is, the person covered by the ERS must be the person who is driving (or present, "there" with) the disabled vehicle(s) - and the vehicle(s) may *not* be a commercial entity - as in a service which transports horses.
I don't know how many equestrians (hay burner) owners there are "out there" -vs- the number of RV owners.....but US Rider is my choice for an ERS provider.
:W
.
I use US Rider as I do have horses that I tow. I have not had to call them for help but because of what is outlined above they are my choice should I need help with the TT.

White Water Falls. Falls are in SC/NC but you view them from NC. Highest water falls east of the Rockies.

RE: How to prevent Keirig from freezing??

In regards to the landfills, K-Cups are recyclable. All the ones I buy state that and tell you what to do. Peal the top off, dump the coffee, rinse, put with recyclables.
Now, do I do this? NOOOO!! When they make it easy to pull the top off I will, right now it is a PAIN.
I use a cheap no name K-Cup brewer, OK, it has a name, but nothing I have heard of before, that makes a single cup and pretty much sucks all the water out each time.

RE: Tandem axle vs single

Snip... Blowing a tire, which will happen…and to you, is another. Snip...
Not necessarily! I have been driving for 70 years, 50 of them towing a trailer of some kind, and have never had a blowout in all of those years. Only had one flat tire and had that changed in about 30 minutes.
Barney
I had 2 blowouts last June. One on my way to site and another on the way home. 1st one did $4500 worth of damage. Took it to RV shop 7/5/2021. All the parts needed just arrived about 2 weeks ago.

RE: Are OTR truckers restricted from speeding?

no, for OTR truckers there is no speed limit. what kind of question is this? In SC they are generous with speeding tickets and you see cars pulled over all the time, but not trucks.
Speeding is one thing, but police can take a look at the OTR's log books and calculate their average speed for long trips based on start time to where they got pulled over andn can issue a speeding ticket based on that. Truckers sometimes keep two log books.
I live in SC and there is LITTLE traffic enforcement. Perhaps what you are seeing is local sheriff departments boosting their revenue. The SC HP does little. Couple years ago all the SE states were doing a big enforcement push. I travelled in SC, NC, TN and VA, everyone partaking but SC. Never saw a SC HP.

RE: Replace just one tire?

I lost 3 China Bombs in a 2 week period.
1. Getting ready for trip and checking tire pressures and the spare had a strange bulge. Replaced it before the trip.
2. Tire blowout 15 minutes from destination. $4500 worth of damage. Happened in June 2021 and still waiting on one last part to fix.
3. On the way home, tire blew 20 minutes from home.
Change ALL your tires including spare.
