RE: What month to avoid the massive bug hatch??

Most years - bugs in the northern lattitudes can be bad from mid-May through June and some into July. Mid July and later are generally pretty good for weather and low bug levels.

RE: Can I run my Onan while plugged into shore power?

The main reason to run the gen is to move the awful ethanol gas through. For this you do not need a load to be placed on the generator head or the engine. The other reason is to exercise the generator head, which you DO NOT need to do weekly or even monthly. It is good to do once a month or every two months, but depending on the gen it is not really that necessary. On my old Onan I would let it sit all winter, and even a few years for one sitting, and all was fine. I could not tell any difference in either the gen or the engine. If you will not use it for a while it is best to run the carb dry or at least use Stabil gas additive to keep the gas from turning to varnish in the carb. There are other methods of course... As for transfer switches or circuit breakers or however your particular RV switches I, nor anyone, can say, that is particular to your setup. Are these recommendations comming from Cummins Onan? I can't find those recommendations anywhere. Cummins suggests 30 days for a load exercise and it is to warm up the generator head and expell any moisture causing corrosion. Time would likely depend a lot on environment of storage. Gascondition is, again, greatly affected by storage conditions, mostly moisture.

RE: GSC Roadside Assist vs Tire and Wheel Protection

I believe you need Platinum Complete to get the Tire & Wheel coverage included.

RE: Can I run my Onan while plugged into shore power?

I have run my 5500 Onan while plugged in. It switches to generator power - I did it simply to exercise the genny while I was campground hosting for 3 months. I think I did have an issue with the genny hour meter though. I think it continued to run after shutting down the generator - somehow being energized from the shore power. My hour meter went from 4XX hours to over 2000 this winter and I never used it except to exercise it monthly while plugged in.

RE: For sale ads?

There are enough places to advertise what you might be selling/shopping for. How many classified sections do you post in/read now?

RE: Las Vegas

After living there for nearly 4 years and making a few visits since, there is no way we would stay at an unsecured RV campground/park in LV.

RE: Volunteer camphost needed

the last time we looked into hosting...and it was a while...illinois considered the "free" campsite as taxable income. best to check. It's not just Illinois. Federal and pretty much any state with an income tax consider it income. Look up Barter rules with the IRS. You are supposed to estimate the value of the goods and services received and record that as income (minus any allowable deductions). LOL, Governments absolutely hate bartering. They get no $$$$. And "estimating value of a benefit given in exchange for labor", leaves a big wide open window for that estimation. I don't know what the current USA estimates are on loss of taxes to barter but I bet it's a BIG number.

RE: toilet water valve

Vacuum breaker valve? Keeps the water line from sucking water from the toilet (in a bad event) into the water lines.

RE: Is the year of the coach based on the year of the chassis

Common - yes. We have 2010 Vista 32k on a '09 F53 Chassis. Big deal if there was a major change in the chassis - like from 5sp to 6sp auto trans. Or, V10 to V8.

RE: Toad on Trailer vs 4 Down

Towing backwards is problematic for the front end, steering. Alignment not setup for rearward travel. I would trailer it.

RE: What Size Telescoping Ladder

If you were nearby, I'd give you one, slightly used, 12 footer. I hate it. Vertical rung spacing is way more than I am comfortable with. Be sure to check that out on whatever you find.

RE: RV Networking Question

Let's see, you have a wireless hotspot or campgrounf wifi that you want to share to your lan, via that wifi? How about a Pepwave SOHO router? I use one to connect to three different phone hotspots in order to utilize (share) the combined monthly data plans.

RE: Going to need a carrier and sim for MiFi this summer.

Where, north? Have you considered Visible? They use Verizon infrastruture, for the most part. Check out their coverage map on line. Check your phone compatibility there as well. We have had very good luck with them this winter.

RE: Too old to drive ?

I'm not 80, YET! 71 - camphosting in SC for the winter and I can tell you I see several folks in their 80s that are traveling in RVs for various reasons. Those that I have seen and spoken with have been very capable at handling and manuvering their rigs. I see young folks that are somewhat defiviant in those abilities. You just need to assess your own abilities, or have a good friend help you decide. Age, alone, should not be the determining factor in your decision. Good luck, and safe travels.

RE: Chevy Equinox

Some versions can, some can't. Like said, read the owners manual for the model you are interested in. It tells the story, and how, if it can be done.
