RE: which gooseneck ball?

This question was asked over on the TDR. Consensus is that the B&W is a better quality product and the bonus is it's 100% US Made.
FYI the CURT is unfortunately Made in China.
The OP on the TDR ended up buying the B&W.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts. The LB that I traded had a B&W Companion/turnover ball hitch...loved it.

which gooseneck ball?

Picked up our new F250 today. It does not have the puck system....nothing in the bed. I want to use the Anderson Ultimate hitch and need to have a gooseneck ball below the bed system installed. Would love to hear your suggestions....B&W, Reese, Curt, Draw-tite, other?

Gas Engine - Fill It Up

This question is a bit tongue 'n cheek. I've traded my diesel for a gasser. It's been so easy to pull thru truck stops to get fuel. Now what?? Any tips on finding gas in locations that are easy to pull thru while towing a 5th?

RE: Puck system & hitch questions

After talking to a few 5th wheelers who tow with SB trucks and own 5th wheels with the Turn Tec nose, I have decided to go with the Anderson Ultimate secured to the gooseneck ball. A big change from the Companion fixed that I have been using. Will also help with the payload that I'm close to maxing out as Lyle correctly pointed out.
Thanks again for all the help.

RE: Puck system & hitch questions

Why would you cancel the 5er package on a new truck? I believe it comes with in-bed 7pin and some other things. I also ordered an F350 within the last month and can’t imagine not getting the 5er package.
Actually found/bought a F250 with 6.75 bed that came into the dealership the previous night but it does not have the puck system. I'm trying to decide on a hitch but I do NOT want rails permanently mounted in the bed. The dealer quoted the Patriot but I did not realize it required the rails when I wrote the check.
It appears that I will need a rail adapter that can be easily removed. Still searching!!

RE: Puck system & hitch questions

Buy Puck parts install your self. Buy a new Patriot slider. Sell old Patriot on CL
Thanks to everyone for all the input. VERY helpful!!
It's my understanding that the Patriot will not fit the puck system. It only fits the rails which I do NOT want. We only pull 4 days each year. The hitch is out of the truck the remainder of the time. Don't want those rails attached to the bed.
My current thought is to cancel the 5th wheel prep and hitch. Then buy the puck system...intall it myself...purchase a Companion slider base (fits puck system)...use the head from my current fixed Companion hitch.
Purchased truck the day before Thanksgiving. Hope to cancel the 5th package in the morning....we will see!

RE: Puck system & hitch questions

The Patriot fits on industry standard rails, not on factory puck systems.
Are the rails fixed in place or can they be removed along with the hitch?

RE: Puck system & hitch questions

I think you will need the B&W Companion slider, for a direct fit to Ford OEM underbed puck system. ICBW, haven't followed updates. :)
Jerry
I think you are correct. The dealer did spec the B&W Patriot but did not mention which underbed system they are installing. Will be making a phone call first thing in the morning....good thing the installer is backed up 2 weeks!!!

Puck system & hitch questions

I'm moving from a LB GM to a Ford with 6.75' bed. The truck does not have factory installed puck system. I want to stick with a new B&W slider hitch (I don't think that a slider is required with my 2015 5th wheel's rounded nose, but want the option of using it). Will be pulling 12,300lbs.
- Which puck system should I have the dealer install?
- Can the Patriot slider easily handle 12.2k lbs? I know it is rated for 18k but has anyone heard of issues with it?
Thanks

RE: Ford Gas 6.2 vs 7.3

Finding anything in stock other than the 6.2 with the 6 speed transmission is about impossible. That only leaves ordering and waiting 10-12 weeks. The 6.2 would be my preferred choice if not for towing 650 miles twice a year. Strange times we live in!!

RE: Ford Gas 6.2 vs 7.3

If you get the 6.2 to tow your 13K FW, Id suggest the 4.30 gears.
You said you don't want the Ram, and the Ford, or GM, will allow more clearance from axle center, to rear of cab.
Jerry
Thanks....I had not thought about the difference in cab clearance!!

RE: Ford Gas 6.2 vs 7.3

If you like the Ram, why not a 6.4 with the 8 speed?
ram 2500
Two issues I have had in this area. 1) No RAM dealer will even seriously discuss ordering one to my specs. 2) Ridiculously low trade offer from RAM dealers. The local Ford dealers are very helpful/accomidating.
Nothing against the truck but I have no desire to deal with the 3 dealers near me.

Ford Gas 6.2 vs 7.3

We no longer travel with our 13k lb 5th except back and forth to Florida from the NC mountains. I'm trading my GM diesel longbed for a gas standard bed. Probably going with a Ford F250 (although I am still considering a RAM). Not ideal for extended traveling but to make 2 pulls (4 days) per year, I'm opting for something that makes sense for day-to-day use.
Everything I've read/heard is that the 6.2 is a workhorse which should give me 250K+. I'm a bit concerned about the 7.3. Have read a couple of bad reviews and it has not been around long enough to be certain about the reliability of the motor.
Will appreciate any suggestion/comments.

RE: is running exhaust brake all the time ok?

I ran mine at all times for 3-4 months then noticed that my fuel economy went down around 2.5 mpg. Now it's only on when towing for going down a mountain.

Another Michelin fan but I went with the AGILIS CROSSCLIMATE. Really like them.

RE: Goodbye old friend, You will be missed

It is so very hard to loose a pet who has become a family member. Keep in mind that Abby was a very lucky dog to have been loved and cared for for 19 years....and she knew it!

RE: Touring British Columbia

Focusing on riltri's question, I have a couple of questions of my own, to narrow things down. Riltri, what sorts of things do you enjoy? Are you a hiker? A biker? Do you like to spend several days in one place, or do you like to move your campsite frequently?
One more random observation: DW and I have done a lot of traveling in North America. The Canadian Rockies, from Peter Lougheed in the south to Jasper in the north, are the most spectacular mountain range we have ever seen.
We are very active.....enjoy hiking, white water rafting, run almost daily once settled into a park and touring historic sights. We will have a 70lb dog with us. Prefer to find 4 locations to use as home base for a week each.

Touring British Columbia

We are considering taking our 5th wheel to British Columbia next fall (2021). We have never been there, so we are starting our trip planning from scratch. Once there we will have about 4 weeks to explore.
Suggestion regarding resources, literate, personal experience, etc will be greatly appreciated!!!
