RE: What is a 6.0L Chevy engine

The 5.3 came out as the 350/5.7 replacement. The 6.0 was their big motor for the HD's, 1500HD, 2500HD, 3500HD. Then in the early 2000's GM came out with the 8.1 for the HD's. I am not sure but somewhere in the mid 2000's GM dropped the 8.1 to meet EPA emission standards fleet wide. The 6.0 became the only gas engine available for the HD's. It is a great motor, not a big block, but it is a workhorse and very reliable. I have had a 2003 1500HD with the 6.0 and 4 speed transmission and a 2010 2500HD with the 6.0 and a 6 speed transmission. Both have been extremely reliable. With what I have towed I wanted a 1500/2500HD, but I did not need the diesel. The 6.0 does have its limitations depending on what you tow, but it is a very reliable engine. It does love to drink gas! My brother in law still has a 2002 2500 Suburban with the 8.1 that he bought new to tow his Airstream. I once met a man at a gas station who had a 2500HD pickup with the 8.1 and an Allison transmission, he said he was never going to sell it. You could not get the Allison transmission in the Suburban, supposedly it would not fit.

RE: New Motorcoach Owner...

That is a really a top line unit. I occasionally look at them on RV Trader. It should last forever, without a lot of the issues of the new powertrains. It is a great unit whose previous owners have already taken the big depreciation hit. I used to occasionally have to drive by the Bluebird factory in Fort Valley when they were finishing up the Wanderlodges in 2006 and 2007 and they just looked great. As I understand it during the 1990's and early 2000's Bluebird was having financial problems and had several different owners and the company decided to get out of the RV business and concentrate on school buses. Enjoy your new purchase, I am jealous.

RE: Help Switching to 40' Pusher

I would look at the BlueBird Wanderlodges. They were really well built and have Cat engines. There are always several for sale on RV Trader.

RE: 2016 Highland Ridge LF319RLS

It probably has cable slideouts. Make sure you check all cables and chains for tightness and fraying. Everything, cables, chains and gears should be well lubricated.

RE: Fort Pickens vs Fort Barrancas Florida

Fort Barrancas is on the Naval Air Station just down the street from the Naval Aviation Museum. That part of the base is open to everyone. You have to enter NAS Pensacola from the west gate, not the main gate to visit this area if you do not have military ID. This area also includes the lighthouse. You can visit all three for free and is definitely worth it. As far as comparing the two forts, Pickens is much bigger and has a lot more to see. Camping is also at Fort Pickens. My wife and I spent 2 weeks there in June and also 3 nights at the RV park on the base. I am retired Navy.

RE: Florida turnpike or I-95??

A few years back there was a lot of crime affecting tourists while traveling on I-95 in Miami. At that time they told all tourists/people passing through to use the Turnpike due to safety. I do not know if they cleaned up the problem at that time, but I would avoid I-95 in Miami like the plague!

RE: For those that have had a blowout when towing

I have had two blowouts on travel trailers. Been towing trailers since 1996. Both blowouts happened on the right rear tire. I never knew that I had a blowout, never heard it or felt it. Camper still towed normally. Both times someone came up beside me and yelled and pointed at trailer tires. Both times were Chinese maypops. Always checked my tires and kept them properly inflated. Just replaced my Chinese maypops with a new set of Goodyear Endurance. I hope they are better than the imported tires. Changing tires on the side of an interstate highway is no fun at all. The best ST tires I ever had were Goodyear Marathons in the late 1990's and early 2000's. They lasted forever!

New Tires Today

I got new tires for the camper today! The OEM Westlakes were manufactured Feb. 2016 and I bought my current camper Oct. 2016. I have had blowouts on the interstate highways before and it is not fun. We are going on a one month, Mid Dec. to Mid Jan. trip to the Keys. I was going to wait until Nov. to put a new set of tires on the camper. Discount Tire Direct had a $100.00 off flash sale per set of tires on Tuesday, I called my local store and they gave me the discount also. I got the Goodyear Endurance LT tires. Goodyear has a $60.00 manufacturer rebate on these tires also. I had them installed today. While waiting for the tires to be installed, and after I had already paid for them, I started wondering if Discount Tire gave a military discount (I am retired from the Navy). I went back up to my service guy and asked him if they gave the discount and he referred me to the manager who immediately gave me the discount! So I got $100.00 off from the flash sale, plus 10% from Discount Tire and a $60.00 rebate from Goodyear. So I only paid a total of $434.34 for a set of 225 75 15 LT Goodyear Endurance Tires including installation and balancing, with a manufacturing date of 3019, which means they are only 4 weeks old from manufacture!

RE: 2013 GMC 1500 longevity?

I have a 2010 2500HD Silverado with the 6.o. It has 118,000 miles on it. It is my tow vehicle and I drive it the gym everyday. It is my keeper, I just turned 67 and I am going to keep it forever. Just do the required maintenance and these GM pickups are good to go. She will be 10 years old on 01 March 2020.

RE: Gas discount

I use a credit card that pays 5% back on gas and I use my Good Sam's card at Flying J and Pilot. So if I use both cards at a Flying J or Pilot and gas is $2.50/gallon I save 17.5 cents per gallon.

RE: What is your favorite COE CG in Georgia

I like all of them. Especially with my Golden age pass. With that being said, most of them were built in the 50's & 60's, except for West Point, which was built in the 70's. They are all very nice, with large campsites. Their main problem is a lack of restrooms, and even fewer restrooms with showers. Our favorite COE campground has over 150 sites with only 4 restrooms and only 2 restrooms with showers.

RE: To DP or not DP

Rick Jay Look at the Bluebird Wanderlodges. They were high end coaches when they discontinued the RV business around 2007. I recently saw a 2000 Wanderlodge LX tandem axle for sale on RV trader for sale by second owner. Approximately 27,000 miles always garaged, second owner who has owned it since 2006. I believe it had a Detroit Diesel 400hp engine. This was a top of the line motor home in 2000. I think the asking price was $77,000. I read an article a couple of years ago that stated if anyone was looking for a used diesel pusher they should always consider Wanderlodges I also saw some 2005-2006 LXI's for 120,000-160,000 range, all with under 100,000 miles. I would say a Detroit Diesel under 100,000 miles is not even broken in yet. No engine regens or DEF. Probably have minimum pollution control.

RE: Which one is better built. Pros and cons

Buy a Bluebird Wanderlodge. They are the best used RV's on the market!

RE: Tire replacement

Never ever anymore Michelin"s on my truck. Bought a set of the LTX's when they still had the 70,000 mile warranty. They cost me $1250 at Discount Tire. They only lasted 36,000 miles! Decided that I was not going to replace them with Michelin, Went to Discount Tire to complain about them and they said they would sell me a new set of Michelin LTX Defenders installed for $580.00, due to warranty considerations on my original set of tires. . I said Uhm, that's a good price and I bought another set. They have now been reduced to a 40,000 mile warranty because they do not last. I asked the manager how long these new tires will last and he said that you will be lucky to get 40,000 miles out of them. My OEM tires were Bridgestones (do not remember model) and they lasted over 60,000 miles. When these Michelin's are gone I will either go back to Bridgestone or maybe try Cooper or Toyo's. I use Michelin's on all my cars and they are good and last a long time.

RE: GM Certified Pre Owned 2016

I have a 2010 2500HD Chevy with the 6.0 and 3.73 gears 4x4. The truck and powertrain are solid. I have 113,000 miles on her and she was exactly 9 years old on March 1st. Never had any oil in it except Mobile 1. Change tranny fluid every 50,000 miles with Valvolene which is a full synthetic and not a belend. Engine likes to rev and drank gas. My only regret is that it came with a 26 gallon gas tank. When she gets to 1/2 I start looking for a gas station. One time while pulling my camper down I-85 between Auburn and Montgomery I put 26.2 gallons in it! I was really running on fumes. Miles remaining said 25!

RE: Hyw 27 Chattanooga South to I10

I live in Carrollton on US-27 just west of Atlanta. US-27 is a great alternative to I-75, but I do not want the secret to get out. It was expanded to a 4 lane divided highway back in the 90's. All rural areas are 65 miles per hour. The only slow spots are going thru Rome and LaGrange. Also, you get on I-185 between LaGrange and Fort Benning, on the south side of Columbus. South of Columbus to Bainbridge is very rural, watch your fuel in this area. a great stopping point is between LaGrange and Columbus, the Pine Mountain area with FDR State Park,Callaway Gardens, and Warm Springs, where FDR had his little White House. South of Columbus is Kolomokie State Park. It is a very interesting place with a very large Indian Mound and museum. Fort Benning is very interesting also with the National Infantry Museum, it is awesome.
