RE: Bought a second truck.

Well, it is possible that by 1978-1979 Ford figured out how to fuse the nut to the bracket and eliminate the need for the Vise Grips....... I'm sure it was getting pretty expensive. :B

RE: Bought a second truck.

When we were kids my dad had an RV shop. We minions were his work force and wired up all the tow vehicles to campers and trailers. The early 70's Ford pickups that were "Camper Special" had a factory camper plug under the front drivers side corner of the bed. The bracket that held the recptical almost always had a pair of Vise-Grips holding the nut in place so the guy/gal on the assembly line could air gun the bolt. They seldom took the Vise Grip off. It was good supplier of Vise Grips. It the later years when a F250 or F350 Camper Special came into the shop we'd find a rusty pair of Vise Grips still there! I was the 2nd owner of a 1972 F-250 camper special so I didn't get the free vise-grips. I was the original owner of a 1979 F-250 camper special, still no vise-grips. I feel cheated, LOL

https://i.postimg.cc/FK00fKHM/410-7.jpg Well it looks like I'm the proud owner of a pair of correct 1966 Mercury 410 Valve covers. Now I need to find the correct air filter housing. BAD AZZ Thanks, I'm stoked that I got them. $$$$ for a pair of old valve covers. LOL

RE: Bought a second truck.

^What he said. And very interesting engine. What is that on the bottom of the fuel pump, canister type fuel filter? (And a Delco product. Interesting…) I’ve never mothballed an engine for an indefinite period, but would think that it would be full of oil and also not missing the oil filter? Yes, its a canister filter. That AC Delco pump really dates the engine. I haven't seen one in years but very pleased that he put that kind of fuel pump on the truck. https://i.postimg.cc/X74ngfLH/fg1a.jpg Most older Ford truck back in the 60s and early 70s had that style of pump and filter. Here's what the fuel filter looks like. I'm going to open it up when I get it home and see how everything inside looks and make sure that the cam has the prober break-in lube on it.

RE: Bought a second truck.

OK, just when I thought this cool thread couldn't get better, it did! :C I had never heard of a 410 either, but it sounds totally awesome. The story behind this engine is very interesting too; I'm looking forward to the updates! And once again, Kenny, thank you for taking the time to continually update this thread with so many details and pics. I know I'm not alone in saying that many of us are thoroughly enjoying it. :) Thank you, I appreciate that you follow my thread and I appreciate your comment. I've know about 410s for years. I was in the automotive business most of my life and always been a Ford man. I am very excited about the engine and looking forward to going and getting it next week. He had it on Craig's List for about 4 weeks, all anybody wanted was the crankshaft and he said he was offered $1000 for it a few times but he wanted to keep all together. I was surprised that it was on there for that long. The extra stoke was to try and get those big old Mercurys thru the intersecting before the light turned red again.

RE: What did you do to your truck today?

I'm shocked at now much the spring assisted rear shocks helped stabilize my truck in corners, very surprise and pleased with the front and rear shocks.

RE: Bought a second truck.

The crankshaft is worth about $1000-1200. 410 pistons are expensive too. I'll keep the 410 in the truck. I'm really not interested in a 390 anymore. ;) I paid less for the 410 than I can buy a remanufactured 390 long block. I need to buy a 428 flywheel, $450-500. I have everything else I need.

RE: Bought a second truck.

Cool engine. Not sure I’ve even heard of them until now, and I’m a little bit of a gear head. Your engine take a carp, or just upgrading to something eclectic and unique? And very clean, it appears. My current engine is pushing oil out of the breather when I'm driving. #5 cylinder has an oil control problem. The engine is 56 years old and tired. I don't want to rebuild it because I don't want the truck out of commission for that long. They only made those 410s for two years and they only came in Mercurys so they are not very common and most people have never heard of them either. This one came out of a low mileage Mercury that was wrecked back in 1972 and was rebuilt with plans of putting it in a hot rod truck but that never happened. It was bored 0.030 and the main and rods are standard. New rv cam and the heads were done. I'll be going to CO to pick it up and once I have it back home I'll open it back up and check things out for myself. The current owner bought it from his friend before he passed away. Its never been started since it was rebuilt back in 1972. I feel very fortunate to have found this one, they are few and far between. I would like to have a 428 but they are out of my price range so I'll settle for one in the middle.

RE: Bought a second truck.

News to me! I turned my 352 into a 390 in my Ford Ranger 1/2 ton. What an amazing difference. Truck looked like this with Crager's and Wide BFG's. Mine was an Emerald Metallic green. https://i.imgur.com/79qkKRcl.jpg Nice truck!!!! Mine has a 390 in it right now and it runs pretty good. It just really likes oil. ;)

RE: What did you do to your truck today?

https://i.postimg.cc/C5t4KLF4/IMG-9095.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/FRhvPhXG/IMG-9088.jpg I changed the oil and filter, again. LOL And rotated the tires. https://i.postimg.cc/QxFFgJbC/IMG-9087.jpg I change it every 5000 miles and it usually still has 50% of the oil's life left. My camper has been on the truck for the last 5000 miles so I'm guessing it shortened the oils life a bit. https://i.postimg.cc/T1rHBDjD/IMG-9103.jpg I put new shocks on the truck too, 2nd time for shocks. The first time I changed them was at 171,000 miles and I used Monroe Reflex shacks and they really didn't make much of an improvement over the original shocks. This time I bought AC Delco shocks and spring assisted shocks for the rear. I am amazed that at 235,000 miles the truck still isn't ready for new brakes. When they are due they'll get replaced with factory SC Delco brakes. Looking forward to my trip to Kanab tomorrow to see if the new shocks helped. :)

RE: Bought a second truck.

https://i.postimg.cc/NFzWbdxp/4.jpg I lucked out and bought a 1966 Mercury 410 for my truck. I'm going to CO in two weeks to pick it up. Pretty excited. They are a 390 with a 428 crankshaft, a stroked 390. Mercury only put them in large cars for two years, 1966-'67. 10.5:1 compression, 330 hp @ 4600 rpm, 444 lb ft torque @ 2800 rpm, 4 bbl, premium fuel. Should work real nice in my old PU.

RE: Water filtration when boondocking

https://i.postimg.cc/y8c8SpDh/IMG-9627.jpg I am fortunate because when I go camping I take my ATV along so I always have a small trailer in tow. I can take two of these 15 gallon barrels with me so that gives me about 70 gallons of fresh water total. https://i.postimg.cc/RZSvNCzm/IMG-9744.jpg I bought this submersible 12v pump. It will pump just about any liquid, water, gasoline, diesel fuel and other thin liquids. I think it was about $10, eBay or Amazon. I can't remember. https://i.postimg.cc/R0v4JS59/IMG-9743.jpg I attached the pump to a piece of PVC and a 25ft hose to the other end. https://i.postimg.cc/PrN4hYCn/IMG-9628.jpg I bought this 12v battery for $10 about 4-5 years ago and it will still pump both FW barrels into my camper. This has always worked well for me and I've never run out of FW. I don't know why you couldn't do something similar. Draining the gray tank is another topic, one that starts wars. :B

RE: Bought a second truck.

https://i.postimg.cc/mrpzmY3Y/IMG-8871.jpg I painted the rear bumper with Rustoleum Hammered Gray, it didn't really look right. https://i.postimg.cc/k5GDRVrB/IMG-8876.jpg So I bought a can of Rustoleum Hammered Silver. The left side is gray and the right side is silver. https://i.postimg.cc/k5RqdW3F/IMG-8887.jpg I'm liking the silver better.

https://i.postimg.cc/N0j4vsr9/IMG-8836-P2.jpg I keep the larger chain in this canvas bag but I like the ide of small tool bags better so I'll be getting two. Thanks again.

RE: Bought a second truck.

A bucket will hold the chain, make it easy to get out of truck without hammering on the body. A cheap tool bag works just as well, and takes up less space. Thanks for the ideas. Looks like a tool bag goes on the list today.
