RE: Who's hitting the road this summer?

We are loading up and heading out Friday to visit family in southeast Kentucky and then wandering around in the Smokies for a week. No solid plans. Just going to wing it like we like to do.

RE: 2020 SE TC Gathering - planning stage

Devildog below is a link to their website. I don't know a ton about the Nashville area but I am sure at least one of these sites could work. https://www.lrn.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Camping/

RE: Over weight? Does it bother you?

With my previous truck I was over my GVWR by a good bit. However, I was under my axle weight, and tire ratings. I was not a fan of it but did not feel unsafe. My biggest concern was liability should I get into an accident. I believe if you stay within your axle and tire limits, and drive like you have some sense, you are safe.

RE: 2020 SE TC Gathering - planning stage

Sorry for the delay folks but MIL had a stroke so we've been dealing with that the last few months. I've never been to Grayson Highlands but it's on my bucket list ... even if just to see the wild ponies. Trying to stay closer to home this time though due to MIL's health. Even then I can't say for sure we'll be able to attend so it might be a "self-service" gathering. I've talked to the folks at Spring Lake RV Resort in Crossville and so far so good. Should be able to make an announcement after the holidays. I fully understand how difficult and time consuming it can be looking after elderly family members with health issues. Maybe this could be an event someone else could take the ball and run with this year? I would be willing to help in any way I can. It would be great to get together with other TC'er folks from the Southeast.

RE: Camper title and registration.

In my state they wouldn't even know where to begin with titling a truck camper. All I received from the dealer was a bill of sale. We pay no registration fees or property taxes on a truck camper. It is simply considered to be cargo.

RE: Members welcoming fellow members

New to the forum and new to truck campers. I feel like I'm a long way away from most members locations, but if anyone is ever in south Mississippi and needs a spot I've got 20 acres with water and sewage hookup. We are in a small town but we live about an hour drive north of New Orleans LA off I-59. That's about the closest tourist attraction to us. Welcome to the forum. Truck campers are not very popular in my area either. Kind of the unicorn of the RV world.

RE: Why aren't Truck Campers popular in W. Pa.?

3800 lb empty, will make close to 5000 lb loaded. Average 3/4 tons truck has close to 3000 lb on rear axle, so that makes total zooming at 7500- 8000 lb. Find me 3/4 truck who has rear axle rated for it? That's exactly what I was thinking. His justification was that NL delivered the unit on a 3/4 ton and he brought it to the show on one. As much as I'd like to see more RV dealers sell them here, they have a lot to learn. Also the camper would have been dry and without all the stuff you typically load in a camper after you buy it.

RE: We have to move

I stayed one night in Silver Lake Campground north of Tampa last week and they looked like they had plenty of sights available. We had no problem getting in.

RE: new to me camper

Congrats on the purchase. As far as storing extra batteries, are there drawers or storage under the dinette? Maybe you could remove a drawer and install a battery box where the drawer used to be?

RE: mounting a propane tank to bumper

+2 I would not recommend having propane tanks mounted in a location susceptible to being ruptured in a collision.

RE: What Portable Propane Gas Grill Do You Use?

Thanks for all of the great input! I opted to try a small Coleman Fold N Go for an upcoming trip where we will be only staying for a day or two in each location during our travels. Since it will only be the two of us I think it will be big enough to cook for us, and easy to setup and store. In the spring I might look at a little larger grill for those trips when we will be cooking for more than just two people.

What Portable Propane Gas Grill Do You Use?

Posting this in the truck camper section because I think we have a unique challenge for storage space. I recently scrapped my Coleman Tailgater Grill as it had rusted out and the regulator no longer worked. I am now looking for a replacement grill. Although I liked the tailgater overall, it took up a fair bit of space. I would like to find a smaller grill that can be easily stored in a truck camper size closet. I would prefer something that maybe fits into a storage bag or some container to prevent the dirty bits from coming into contact with other things being stored in the same closet. Does anyone use a grill, that you consider quality, that would meet those requirements?

RE: 2WD or 4X4 for a truck camper

Wow! I just read through this entire thread and boy... I don't claim to be the sharpest tool in the shed, however I have spent most of my short life around farming, trucks, Jeeps, and offroading. I do agree for many people a 4x4 truck to haul your TC is not a necessity. In my case it has saved my bacon on many occasions. First of all, living in the southeast things tend to get muddy in winter and spring. I can say with certainty there was no way I could drive through the field where I store my camper with my truck in 2wd. I know because I have tried. Second, I recognize everyone "camps" differently with their TC. For me, it is primarily camping in open fields for various offroad events. I could go on for hours recalling the number of times I have had to use 4wd to get in or out of a camp field. I have also personally pulled 2wd trucks out of the same field using my Jeep. Could a more experienced driver get the 2wd truck out of the field without assistance? Maybe. I for one would pay to see the technique they would use to get it out. Its been my experience that without 4wd the front tires just become bricks that dig into the mud. To each his own I suppose.

RE: 2020 SE TC Gathering - planning stage

https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/grayson-highlands A little further east, but Grayson Highlands is a beautiful campground with a lot of things to see and do near by. Depending on dates for the event I would be interested in attending.

RE: Camping @ The Big E 2019??

I live right across the river from NNSY where the Big E was decommissioned and now sits at the pier awaiting its fate. It's sad to see her stripped down and rusting away at the very Yard where is was conceived and built not so long ago.
