RE: 6 Volt Interstate batteries

Thanks to teejaywhy I have a conundrum. Lined up a couple of Les Schwab GC2 6 volts but I haven't picked them up yet. Looked at Lowe's Deka batteries and they seem to have more power, so hard to find good info on any 6 volt battery. The Deka's are also cheaper at $144 each, I think the Schwab's are $168 each. Can't get the Deka's till Oct 19th, but no hurry right now. Do the GC numbers mean anything. The Schwab is a GC2, the Deka is a GC 15, that better?? What to do? I don't know anything about the Les Schwab battery, best to compare specs from the manufacturer web page. The main spec to look at is the Amp-Hour rating as measured at a 20 hour rate. Please note, Lowes website erroneously gives the rating at 448 amps. The Deka GC15 is rated at 230 Amp-Hours.

RE: 6 Volt Interstate batteries

Trojans indeed, are a bit pricey and I was put off by the bad reviews of the Costco Interstate batteries, even though they are a steal at about $95 each. I ended up choosing the 230AH Deka GC15. Lowe's carries them at $144 each, free delivery to your local store, and you can get a 5% discount if you are a veteran.

RE: Kebler Pass CO

teejay -- a wild guess -- is that Marcellina Mountain?? Very distinctive formation -- a big blob of lava that welled up and bent the overlying layers into an arch. Not sure, but looking at the map it seems very likely.

RE: Kebler Pass CO

Follow-up: We did end up using the Kebler Pass road on our recent Colorado trip to traverse from Hwy 133 to Crested Butte. Road was very well maintained gravel, we averaged 30-35 mph. Very scenic! https://pbase.com/teejaywhy/image/170994441/original.jpg

RE: Norcold N7X intermittent on propane coldest setting

Just to clarify... we were boondocking and NOT connected to shore power. No 120VAC is present. Thanks

RE: Norcold N7X intermittent on propane coldest setting

......operating indicator turns RED THAT is associated with NO 120VAC Available and fridge SWAPPED to gas but gas failed to light off. Per service manual Should none of the heat source inputs be available, the power ON /indicator light (See Fig. 14, D) will be solid RED Are you using 'AUTO' mode or Manually selecting 'GAS Mode'?? See pgs 28/29 for troubleshooting Solid RED Most likely issue is with gas train components...clean burner, correct spark gap, spark electrode, gas valve solenoids of circuit board Burner dirty, spark gap are maintenance ---owner The other items are NOT components that can be individually replaced......whole gas train is replaced as an assembly which should be a warrnty item. Polar 7/8 Series Service Manual Thanks for the help. I will look closely at the troubleshooting guide. I'm now not sure if the the red indicator was solid or if it was blinking... hmm (RTFM right?) To follow-up: - I am manually selecting GAS mode. - The fridge is operating normally for many hours before the indicator goes green to red. (not like a start-up problem) - Once I set the the temp from 5 to 4, the fridge operated without fault for 3-4 days. Someone suggested an "ice up" condition and adding a inside fridge fan could help. Does this sound plausible? For sure, this was the first extended trip where we had the fridge packed with food. Thanks again. Tom

Norcold N7X intermittent on propane coldest setting

Trying to figure out if this is a known problem or an issue to be concerned about. We have the Norcold N7X fridge. Works fine on electric. Works fine on propane EXCEPT if it is set to the max cold setting (five snowflakes), in which case, the operating indicator turns RED after some time of operation. The period of time seems random, anywhere from 12 to 36 hours of operation and not associated with any particular action or event. On our recent 10 day trip, this happened about 5 or 6 times over a period of about 7 days. Happened a couple times after traveling and arriving at the campsite (at first, I thought perhaps the flame was blowing out..) Several times it was red in the morning when I got up. At least once during the daytime when we returned to camp after a hike. Power OFF then ON restores operation after which the fridge operates normally again for some random period. At some point, I set the cold setting back to four snowflakes after which the fridge stayed on and operated normally for the remaining 3-4 days of the trip including. Question: Is this "normal" or should I contact my dealer before my warranty expires. Thanks for the collective experience! Tom

RE: truck/trailer sway

Thank you for the quick replies! Sounds like I need to get some weights of my truck and trailer. If I take my rig to a weight station on the highway will they take these weight measurements for me? Not a weigh station. You can take it to a CAT scale at Pilot truck stop near you. Costs about $12.00 to weigh and should give you 3 weights, front axle, drive axle and trailer axle(s). https://learntorv.com/how-to-weigh-a-travel-trailer/

RE: Cracker Barrel

I know some people really like Cracker Barrel - but man their food is greasy... I think there are better places for breakfast. Tell us where we can get a breakfast that's comprised of eggs, bacon, sausage, and the like that's not greasy? Face it, restaurants serve greasy food -- if it wasn't greasy (especially those breakfast items) it would be pretty tasteless! Maybe if they offered an alternative to a greasy breakfast? They don't even have an omelette on the menu. I guess they do have oatmeal. But who goes to a restaurant to get oatmeal...

Kebler Pass CO

aka Gunnison County Road 12 30 mi unpaved between CO133 on the west and Crested Butte on the east. Thinking of using it in August. 2500HD Duramax pulling a 25' TT. I am quite used to driving mountain roads and unpaved roads. Just wondering if this is a bad idea towing a trailer. Anyone done it? Descriptions say it's smooth and passable for passenger cars. Not going there if it's 30 mi of washboard. Thanks in advance!

RE: Costco/ Colman Solar set up?

It is 110 watt. I really don’t need a controller or inverter as I Already have those. Then you probably don't want to consider the Costco item that includes both of those.

RE: % bleach to sanitize fresh water tanks

Per the EPA at https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/emergency-disinfection-drinking-water That article deals with using bleach to disinfect drinking water, not tank sanitization.

RE: % bleach to sanitize fresh water tanks

After draining the bleach, I suggest adding a cup or two distilled vinegar when you refill the tank. Drain again and refill with water only. What is the reason for the vinegar mixture? Removes the bleach taste How do you get rid of the vinegar taste?

RE: Amp hours

I'm trying to determine whether my current solar system is adequate or if I need to add more panels/batteries. Currently I have 2 6 volt lead acid batteries. I have 300 watts of panels 40 amp controller I'm curious as to how many Amp hours my trailer uses. Small 3 way fridge running on LP CM detector Stereo on standby mode Water pump I usually try to use battery powered lights at night. The kids also watch a movie to unwind at night, the TV and DVD player run on a separate small battery hooked to an inverter. Small battery will be charged during the day from the panels. We keep water use at a minimum. I also have two dual USB charging ports. Heat is set at 60. Night time outside temps can dip down into the high 30's in Spring and late Summer where we usually camp Our usual camping area is at 4,500-5,000+ altitude with pretty intense sun in the afternoon. Thanks Brian You have a pretty nice setup. As others have mentioned, the furnace will be your biggest user. The other stuff (TV, DVD, LED lighting, chargers) are minimal draws and can easily be ran from your main batteries without need to have separate batteries. Complete your setup by installing one of these: https://www.victronenergy.com/battery-monitors/bmv-712-smart

A trip to the CAT Scale

A visit to the scale this morning to see how my setup checks out. Comments welcome. Truck: 2007 GMC Sierra Classic 2500HD Crew Cab Duramax 4WD Full tank of gas and one passenger, ARE truck cap. Trailer: 2019 Nash 23D Filled with camp gear, batteries, full propane, full fresh water tank. (all weights in pounds) Truck sticker: GVWR: 9200 GAWR FR: 4670 GAWR RR: 6084 Trailer sticker: GVWR: 7000 Truck only weigh: Steer Axle: 4280 Drive Axle: 3160 Trailer Axle: 0 Gross Weight: 7440 Truck and trailer - WDH not engaged Steer Axle: 3940 Drive Axle: 4340 Trailer Axle: 5680 Gross Weight: 13960 Truck and trailer - WDH engaged Steer Axle: 4200 Drive Axle: 3940 Trailer Axle: 5840 Gross Weight: 13980 Everything seems kosher but please help me evaluate this data? How to calculate trailer weight? Gross wt 13960 - truck wt 7440 = 6520 (?) How to calculate tongue weight? Using weigh with WDH disconnected? 3940 + 4340 = 8280 - 7440 (truck only) = 840? If I'm understanding correctly: - Truck within spec - Trailer within spec - Tongue weight approx 13% - WDH seems to be working Anything I'm missing? THANKS!!! Tom
