RE: 36" Hitch Extension for 2" Receiver - Are they Made?

Baja Man, I have a custom overlap welded extension that was custom made by an RV Lance dealer so I could tow my boat with the camper on. He asked what type of boat I had, as tongue and tow ratings are reduced with the extension. Originally the Dodge was Class III but I upgraded to Class IV when I towed horse trailers without the camper a few years ago. The first tube goes in the truck receiver and the other piece is welded onto that piece with quite an overlap and just clears the rear bumper of the camper. My hitch then plugs into this end with the proper drop to tow level. Test your tongue weight of the boat.( My 18 foot bow rider is under 100 lbs). A simple wiring extension is used. I do reinforce the connection with taught safety chains and inspect before each use. Been using for 24 years and stored in a dry garage. A bonus of the extension is I usually remove the camper at the camp site and leave the extension on the truck when launching, which allows no rear wheel submersion on even shallow entry ramps.

RE: onan 2500 lp generator

Make sure the battery is fully charged. I've had that problem twice where mine refused to start even though it cranked the generator over. After taking the plug out and checking for spark and putting it back in (no easy job) and trying multiple times to no avail. I suspect the spark was weak during cranking. After charging the battery for several hours it started right up. Another thing is to check the plug gap as there is a difference between the gas model and the propane model. The gap is less on the propane model. I try to run mine every 6 weeks or so after charging the battery when in storage. Run your stove burners first before the generator. A clogged carb could cause the same problem but propane carbs are not as prone to this as gas models. Doesn't mean it could not happen. Test all gas appliances water heater, heater. Oil level check also. Good luck!

RE: Looking for recommendations on a two bike rack

I could triangulate the mounting of the bike rack with ratchet straps going from the center of the rack out to the corners of the truck to keep it stable, either on the front or the back. I double this advice from Hemi Joel. I have a nice Yakima rack mounted in my rear tow hitch extension in back of the camper and the play up and down was too much and tries to launch the bikes off the rack. Almost lost one kids bike first time out with it. Tie down straps to the jacks in the back fixed it. Used a ladder rack for a while till it broke the ladder. Mine is very light aluminum. Had to insert 1/2" copper pipe into ladder pipe and drill and screw down. Used generous amounts of JB weld where it attaches to the rung of the ladder. Just too much inertia when hitting dips or mild off road.

RE: MotorTrend F150 Lightning Tow Test

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWKsT53-hw8wow, what I realy want to know is not the range it can tow at capacity but how far can it go with 2000lbs in the box. might be a nice setup for a small camper. a buddy of mine finaly got his last month and absolutly loves it. I'll admidt its kinda neat, but for me it would have to be able to get a decient range with 2000lbs in the back to work for me right now, but I would still need my F350 for towing the 5th. when a electric can get 500 miles towing 14000 lbs then I will trade in my F350. Steve This link on this forum "camping in an EV always charging" explained a sleeper shell on the Ford lightning. Remember payload is less than 2000lbs for the XLT trim.

RE: MotorTrend F150 Lightning Tow Test

The Ford weighs 6500 lbs with less than 2000 payload. GVWR is 8250. Putting more batteries for range improvements would catapult the weight even more and affect insurance premiums, tire and suspension requirements, weight registration fees, cost and charge time. But they are sold out!

RE: Norcold 12cu Drains Battery on LP

Another thing to check is if the Norcold has a "climate control" switch mounted on the inside of the door. My Dometic has this and it is a 12 VDC heating element in the door to reduce condensation in humid environments. In the instructions for the dometic frig it states not to leave this switch on when operating in gas mode with no DC charging present. Always check the battery condition before turning the frig on. Check with voltmeter. Even CO2 and propane sensors draw power and if left for a several weeks with no charge will draw down the battery(s). Make sure when the battery cutoff switch is turned off even those items are off. If in doubt disconnect the ground cable directly at the battery. Store RV with a fully charged battery. Good luck on the detective work.

RE: New battery cost.

A Little over 100$ American at O Reillys and autozone. The deep cycles have not gone up much here, but the automotive starting batteries sure have. Pushing 200$ before tax for the good ones, with 22$ core refund. Had AAA replace one a while back for a car and cost 200$. Not long ago was ~150$. Really gone up just like Tires. (and everybody needs those items if you own a car!)

RE: Alternative to Onan 2500LP Generator?

My Onan 2500 LP has been flawless for 24 years. Only issue if battery is too low, will crank over but not fire, due to spark being too weak I suppose. Always turn propane on and run stove burner to get gas in system before starting if gas has been turned off a long while. Usually starts 2nd crank. Spark plug gap is set tighter than gas models. Taking spark plug out is tricky using 13/16 socket and a wrench on end (no room for ratchet). Oil change only every 3 or 4 years because the propane models are so clean. Check oil with dip stick touching but not screwed in with camper level. Check air filter if run in dirty environment. Enjoy!

RE: Tesla Semi truck unveil & test ride set for Oct 26th !

Most people could not afford a top optioned Shelby, Corvette or 'Cuda back in the 1960s muscle car era either. And of course there are plenty of vehicles today that cost more than Model S Plaid. In fact many of those cars are worth more than the Tesla S today! They weren't family cars either. The Tesla is a well engineered car no doubt but certainly a little pricey after > 10 years of sales. Part of their successful business model! Ya can always justify the purchase: figure price per pound! Only $28.94 per pound!

RE: Tesla Semi truck unveil & test ride set for Oct 26th !

Not bad for a family sedan that has a curb weight of 4700 lbs! (and a price tag of 136,000 $ American.)

RE: Dino juice v Electrons....

curb weight is 6500 lbs on the XLT trim Ford Lightning. Payload is slightly less than 2000 lbs. I see new registration weight fees for EVs in the near horizon to make up for gas tax and smog fees. Wonder what they will be? How much would a true Superduty version weigh? The GMC Hummer EV weighs a whopping 9200 lbs. Oh My! That's as much as my 98 Dodge 2500 with my Lance camper. Food for thought.

RE: Dino juice v Electrons....

Modern Man/Woman cannot live without the "juice". Both fuel and electricity flavors. It's the corner we are painted in for ~100 years since the industrial revolution. Both juices will be consumed for a long time. I believe Tesla warrants their batteries for 8 years keeping around 75% of charge capacity. Time is a bigger factor than miles especially for RVers. Could be a problem for the used electric car market. The used car market is much bigger than the new car market. Average car in the USA is ~12 years old. In Cali might be 15.

RE: Replacement catalytic converter

Ever wonder why the price of gas/diesel in Cali is the highest in the USA including Hawaii? Kind of affects RVers, even you guys/gals visiting from out of state! Ever wonder why any new 4 or 2 stroke garden equipment including generators will be banned by 2024 in Cali? (might even include new RV generators) Rv industry is currently trying to fight this. Ever wonder why new ICE cars are planned to be banned by 2035 in cali? Trucks will be next. Diesel trucks for sure. Ever wonder why Recreational offshore fishing and tour boats are being required to change out or heavily modify their existing diesel engines by 2024 in Cali whether they can or not? Ever wonder why New homes will be mandated to have solar power and not have natural gas connections in cali. Ever wonder why Gas water heaters are scheduled to be banned by 2030 in cali? Yes Mary Nichols is behind all this and has plans for everyone! I don't think I covered a tenth of the plans all backed by the Cali Guv. I luv California and all the places to RV here but the rules are onerous. That's a pleasant word for the meaning!:)

RE: Replacement catalytic converter

I really feel your pain. You have a legal vehicle and have an exhaust system component stolen and the state of California makes it worse (much worse). My dads 2002 E450 V10 Minni did not pass smog initially a couple years ago because the state software wanted to test it as OBD2. Under the hood it said OBD1 and only has two upstream O2 sensors with no downstream O2 sensor. So Ford readyness software never shows the O2 ready. After two weeks of my research driving a couple hundred miles and talking to the state referee he agreed with me and talked to the smog station that did the test. It then passed under OBD1. Make no mistake RVers: the state of California has a CARB (California Air Resources Board) headed by a woman named Mary Nichols. She is appointed and has been there since Schwarzenegger. She is very powerful and does not care about you and especially your motorhome, boat, car, truck, lawnmower, chain saw or motorcycle. Her goal in life is to get you off the road! She has stated publicly she hopes gasoline exceeds 8$ a gallon to get people to quit driving. Her kind is unfortunately spreading though out the USA. Remember her name as most do not know her.

RE: Gas fridge on the move?

I have a 98 Lance and it has always had trouble running on gas if speed is over ~50 mph as the flame gets blown out causing the check light to come on, otherwise it works great on gas. May have been your problem with a cross wind as you say it worked before. If it is failing while stationary could be something else. I had to replace my dometic control board after only 4 years with a dinosaur board and never had another problem. It would just shut off the gas solenoid 5 minutes to 4 hours triggering the check light. Thermocouple voltage tested fine. Was a common problem with this vintage. I use the DC mode while on the high speed roads and am careful not to leave it on DC if the truck is not running. DC works fine on the road to maintain temperature if you have at least an 8 awg wire from truck to camper battery through a 40 amp circuit breaker and an isolator solenoid. Remember that it is not on continuously and cycles just like ac or gas mode. Always pre cool the frig a day before leaving on the trip.
