easy solution take off the striker plate and file or dremel grind the hole in the plate larger on the edge that's catching and reinstall. I thought about that. And might do it. I’m just curious if this is unique to my camper, Host campers with the door on the side, or to campers in general.

Host Everest Deadbolt Issue

So, I’m not sure this is an issue with our camper or if it’s campers in general. Occasionally, or deadbolt won’t go into the lock opening. Called Host the first time this happened and they said to lower or raise the rear right corner which did help. But this past week I kept the camper on the truck and the deadbolt wouldn’t go in the opening until I raised the right rear jack. Looking at the lock opening it looks like maybe it’s installed a little high. Or, it’s this a typical issue with campers. Other that that and a tiny issue with the thermostat it’s been great so far.

I am missing the logic here. So your truck got stuck in the mud and you are thinking of getting a bigger truck so you can carry even more weight? More weight just further limits you to staying on good roads. I think the stick in the mud story was mutually exclusive of the payload thing. You’re right. Could have left that info out.

Goes back to: The truck has a sticker that says cargo weight rating is 1772KG(3906lbs) “with this truck as manufactured”. Host sticker says “as equiped” 4350 I realize we’ve gone through this before but the camper weighing more than the manufacturer suggests is in my mind. We packed the camper with that info, and what I read here in my other thread. No issues what so ever driving from Washington to Montana with only stableloads upper and lower installed. So, forgetting about the getting stuck part, we would like to load up everything we usually do when we go to Montana, but also tow my wife’s car, and if need be, carry a full tank of fresh water. If pulling a small car won’t affect the uphill downhill driving over mountain passes ( 3 this trip ), then fine we can tow with the current truck. It’s all the extra stuff that adds up I’m concerned about. We would love to put the camper on a truck and hook up her car and be too concerned we are over weight or under powered. As for daily driving a stiffer suspension truck, I’m not too concerned about that. I appreciate the feedback and comments. Gives me something to think about while we decide what our next steps is. The Everest is a keeper, and we would like to tow the little car, so it evolves from there. Thanks folks.

RE: New Truck More Payload

I’m still here. Just curious where some of you get your stats re: tire and axle ratings. I look for info and most of the time it’s to buy a truck, or towing. Not too much on payloads. And while I’m at it, how do you determine or know that pulling a car behind the truck with camper won’t affect braking? We’re still gathering info. We came across this Ford F550 with the flatbed camper. It didn’t look much higher or beefier than our Chevy. The payload is beyond what we need and would love to load up the camper, hook u0 my wife’s car, and go. Not think about weight. Speaking of, we are going through an area where we won’t have water so I plan on filling up the tank. This will add another ~500lbs to our payload. Instead of taking someone’s word I’d like to read something more official, no offense. RE: New Host Everest

11 nights in our Everest in Montana. True about the bathroom door. If possible I would give up the floor space for a rectangular bathroom so door isn’t angled in. Getting into our bed is fairly easy. We are 60 and 51. My wife enters from the bathroom side, myself the other opening by the fridge. Making the bed—we sleep on top of a comforter and use fleece blankets. Fold fleece blankets in the morning and smooth out the comforter. We chose a queen with windows on either side for light and air cross flow. I’ll post some photos in another thread.

New Truck More Payload

We are in Montana at the KOA in St Mary. We have land up past Babb and was hoping to bring our camper ( Host Everest ) up there but too soggy and muddy. In fact we got our truck stuck and had to wait over night to get it out. The camper wasn’t on the truck thank God. Got me to thinking about a few things, one buying a new truck with much more payload than what our current truck has. Looked at the Dodge 5500 briefly ( there was one here at the KOA ), but nothing serious. We are also thinking of towing my wife’s Toyota RAV4. If we went with the Dodge 5500, I’m assuming we have plenty of payload capacity and some. There are many things we usually bring this way but didn’t to keep weight down. Most tools, but some camping stuff. We do a lot of work clearing trees and brush so we bring out chainsaw and weeder. We could use our small ladder as well. All this stuff adds up I know. What do you folks think?

RE: Thinking about the next Tow Vehicle

Our first TT was a Starcraft Autumnridge no slide. We pulled it with two Suburbans and eventually a 1 ton truck. Scariest driving I ever experienced. Once we traded the last Suburban for a long bed GMC 3500 we barely noticed the trailer back there. We upgrade our TT several times same with our trucks. I would never again tow a TT with anything less than 3/4 ton ( and would prefer 1 ton ). We are hauling a Host Everest with a 2019 Chevrolet 3500 Dually. We are considering a Dodge 5500 for various reasons the main one payload. Good luck with your search.

Quoted wrong person. I too get a slight kick out of folks riding their brakes down mountain passes. One steep downhill I drive on to go fishing I drop it in manual and shift to 2. Coast most of the way down. This same area we will take the camper often since it’s about 30 minutes away.

Just curious, could you use tow mode for going down a steep grade or exhaust brakes? I use it with an EMPTY truck! With nothing pushing the truck I just get it to the speed I want and let it coast. Unless the hill is EXTREME, the truck cruises right down the hill at whatever speed I chose at the top. Never have to touch the brakes. It always makes me giggle, watching the folks in front of me stab on their brakes every 2 seconds. Always hit the tow haul button when we took our TT out. From and to storage which was nearby not so much. Exhaust brakes going down a pass mainly on I-90 in Montana and Rogers Pass between Missoula and the turn to Augusta.

Our planned big trip is next month. St Mary Montana area for near two weeks. Several mountain passes but should be fine since our trip from the dealership took us over the Cascades ( I-90 ) with that half tank of water we didn’t know was there. Our concern comes from our first experience towing a 30ft TT with a Suburban for three years. Too scary so we bought a GMC Denali 3500 SRW LB. Then we felt safe and never considered weight with the next three TT’s. Now like most folks we drag along too much stuff for “just in case” , so for now we are re-prioritizing our stuff. We just want to be safe. Next purchase will be new tires soon. We have used BF Goodrich K02’s for close to 7 years but that was towing a TT. I read the ride is mushy with a camper on the truck, but that was one persons experience. I read the Cooper AT3’s are supposed to be great tires. I’d like to go with the K02’s because they are so good in the snow. Anyway, I took the truck to a scale again and weighed the rear. 3520 with a full tank of gas. Soon I’ll load the camper on the truck and get some more scale numbers. With some good tires and smart loading I feel confident about or trip to Montana. And other trips around this area. Thanks for the feedback thus far.

I have stable loads upper and lower only and the ride home was smooth and without any issues. Interestingly, I found out the camper still had the half tank of water the shop put in to do the walk through.

A Little Help With Weights

We purchased a Host Everest recently. We figured we would need a newer duality so we traded in our 2015 GMC short bed 3500 for a 2019 Chevy dually. Here are some numbers I have and am hoping for clarification for my piece of mind haha… GVWR—13000 Curb Weight full tank—8400 ( Just weighed today after fill up ) GM Truck Camper Rating ( sticker in glovebox )—3900 Host Everest As Equipped—4350 ( Host Sticker ) Am I missing anything? I assume we gain back some GVWR with no passengers in rear seat. We won’t travel with water in the camper until we are close to our camping destination. Question is, what is our true payload weight less mine and my wife’s weight. And her duffle bag lol! For now we are carefully considering our usual camping gear while we load up. Thanks a lot.

One I know of exist in SE Washington. We ordered ours back in Sept and picked it up about two weeks ago. We considered the Cascade but decided on the Everest mainly because we like all the windows and the “rear living” floor plan similar to our Grand Design Imagine 2500RL. We have a test trip planned this coming weekend then two weeks in Montana next month. Off and on trips to the St Joe river for fly fishing the rest of the year. Plenty of opportunities to be seen.

Ride home from Monroe, WA was smooth most of the way. Took 203 to I-90 then I-82/12 to Walla Walla. Some heavy wind around Yakima which pushed us around a little but mostly an easy drive back. All we had installed were the stable loads. This is on a 2019 Silverado 3500HD DRW. The tailgate had to come off ( question in another thread ). Weight is a concern we are wondering about. 100lbs over already and nothing loaded in the camper. Hate to upgrade the truck already since we got it last fall. Just curious how much folks go over payload max.

I was just thinking of this yesterday. We are due to pick up our Host Everest this Thursday. Got me to wondering if the tailgate would be removed, or if it should be removed. When we get home the camper would come off the truck. Would I be putting the tailgate back on, ( and off ) each time we go camping and come home?
