Look out for " arn't you lucky, this unit has just been equiped with a new converter." Electrical problems can take 5 minuites to fix to 6 months to find. Blown circut boards in furnaces/ fridge, alternaters etc can all be problems that do not show up on inspection.Usually the cause can be traced to a well meaning person adding such things as propane sniffers, higher output altenaters, electric blankets etc. and alarm systems. There is nothing quite like an electrical system of 3 power sources with a positive wire grounding some add on.

Great write up Johnny.Even though I am not a first time buyer I Know it will help me now. I bought a used 28' Allergo bay about 5 years ago and had great trips and good luck with it. I am now looking to trade it in on a used newer model with one or two slides in the 30 to 33'models. Being 70 I don't want my payments to high in case something happens to me so my wife can handle it.
There are alot of used units out there and we have been checking places like Lazy Days in Fla. (we live in Ga). My main concern is are there any units out there that just don't stand up. I heard that Thor products are not the best. What about Coachmen or fleetwood or Gulfstream.
I sure would like to hear from anyone that has an opinion on what are the best and worst class A's in the medium price range.
You All can write me at CorkyJG@comcast.net if you like.Plan to go to Fla in Jan to look at some units.
Thanks
Corky

Read this thread several times, and go back several times before you sign the contract.

Lots of good information here and in the other threads I have been perusing over the last two months ( while incapacitated for surgical procedures ). While I have been RV-ing since '68, my present ( and previous ) rigs have all been towed ( pop-up, travel-trailer & fiver ). As I am now considering my first move to a motorhome, I am trying to gather as much info as possible, and have not yet decided whether to go new or used.

The subject of discounts on new units has been discussed in several threads extensively, but the only mention I have found ( so far ) on used discounts, is in your What To Pay topic in this thread. Am I correct in assuming that I should expect to pay Low Retail ( NADA ) for a used coach in good condition? I looked at the numbers on an '03 Bounder 32W ( Workhorse ), with Av. Retail of $80,300 & Low Retail of $66,650. The assumed "discount" would be 17%, whereas an assumed discount of 23% off the List Price new ( From the RV Buyers Guide ) of $104,520 would be $24,040, for a difference of $80,480.

I would love to see any comments on either my assumptions, or my arithmetic.

Well done Johnny T. and I also think this should be placed as a "permanent" feature.
The only thing I can add is to NOT buy on a whim or with your eyes/heart/ emotion. We did that. We (OK it was mostly me) fell in love with a beautiful very large 5th wheel. And long story short we bought it. Then had to get something to pull it with and then had to actually use it with NO Rv experience. Not smart. Did not like this set up, traded it in for a used, smaller class A. Did our learning on this rig and have gone on from there.
Always "sleep on it" before signing the dotted line, write down pros and cons, be honest, and then you can feel good about you decision.

For us this was a fairly simple process. Budget, features and the highest quality coach, even if it required considering somewhat older coaches. It is very helpful if the previous owner can provide good documentation on all maintenance issues. We also found it helpful to hire an inspection of the rig by a qualified professional, if the rig is out of town.

Do you think used motorhomes that are only a year old are lemons, or that there might be something seriously wrong with them? Why would people sell them so quickly is there wasn't any problems with the coach?

We been thinking of upgrading to a Class A, but are a little leary when we see one that's only a year old, with very little mileage.

A great post the only thing I would add if you have a dealer you know often they take trade-in MHs for larger units the sales person you have dealt with before might let you know if a good used MH comes in. One for example that the folks are trading up. These Motorhomes are often in very good shape the owner just wants another with better features or a larger MH. The really good buys don't stay at the dealer long.
