Thanks to everyone for your help. I searched around the web and found the following site for Ford Motorcraft Technical Resources -
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs/retail/default.asp
I took out a 31 day subscription to the info for the E-450 for $16.95 and have been printing out everything that looks like I could DIY. This was a lot cheaper than buying manuals from Helm and is all I would ever need.
This site also has info for Ford/Lincon/Mercury cars as well as light trucks and the F-53 motorhome chassis.

What have been people's opinions of the online manuals?
Also, how much difference is there between a 2000 and 2002 chassis? One of the online providers I found has E-450 manuals, but only for 2002 and beyond.

Wow, I thought this thread was dead! Two weeks ago, I found the 2005 Ford manuals on eBay and got Volumes 1 and 2 of the "Workshop Manual" and the wiring diagram book, all for $75 plus shipping. The only additional one I'd like to get is the 2005 PowerTrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual for the 6.0 diesel, but I haven't found a cheap source. The latter is $50 from Helminc. I'll keep looking.
Anyway, the workshop manuals are excellent for taking things apart. On the E-450, and especially with the diesel, there is simply no way to get at things, and the manuals are good for gaining access.
