When you are camping in a wildlife area, be VERY CAREFUL when opening your door late at night to check out noises.
The people camped next to us this weekend, heard noises around 3 in the morning. Their dogs kept barking. The wife opened the door to take a look outside, their dogs jumped out. A coyote snatched the little one and was gone in an instant, before the wife could even react.
I believe the couple are fulltimers in that campground. I had seen the dogs Fri and Sat outside during the day without a leash on.
It was horrible.

Excellent reminder. Coyotes are attracted to the pet poop odor and will hang out waiting for an opportunity. They will not hesitate and can be quite bold when it comes to snatching a small pet.

We have 3 little ones and I don't ever let them outside unless I'm at the other end of a short leash. This is while camping or at home. We have big owls and coyotes that we've seen in our backyard many many times. With the drought we're having now, alot of wild animals are looking for water and not afraid of coming into town. All of mine do their business on wee wee pads, thank goodness.

That's awful. A good firend of mine's mom lives in Barstow out in the desert. A couple of years ago her husband walked outside in the evening, to let their little poodle do his business before going to bed. The little dog followed his nose around the side of the house, out of site of dad. All of a sudden there was a doggie yelp and the little dog was gone. A coyote had to have been waiting. What a heart break for these old folks. They lost their beloved pet, right in their own yard.

Coyotes are very fast. This poor little guy basically ran down the steps into the coyote's waiting mouth.
The wife opened the door to take a peek outside and the little dog just bolted thinking he could protect his territory.

It is not only coyotes or animals on the ground that you have to worry about. I know of a person traveling in Alaska who let their small dog out (in the day time) and an eagle swooped down and snatched the poor dog. People forget that we are in their territory and they will do what they have to do to survive.

Thats alful.I can`t imagine that happening they must have been sick over that.
I wonder how a 100 pound Lab would have faired aganist a coyote????

The stories are awful, indeed. I want to thank you for posting this. I hate to admit that it is something I never thought about.
Gizmo ran after a skunk once at a campground. Was not directly sprayed on but he still ended up stinky.
I know coyotes are around but I never thought much about it. We will be very careful.

It's ashame what happened to the little dog. We were camped at Lake Pleasant, AZ. one time in the overflow and there was a coyote stalking us during day light hours. The coyote would walk around the perimeter or just lay down and watch us. I would say he was as wide as a football field away from us. We kept the dogs close to us at all times. Coyote's will go after small kids. We've had a few incidents of this in our town.
