What a timely post! I just installed the Progressive Industries Surge Protector (EMS-HW30C) on our 30Amp service to our 5th wheel yesterday! ![biggrin [emoticon]](http://www.rv.net/sharedcontent/cfb/images/biggrin.gif)
After reading this post, I wish I'd done it a lot sooner!
Thanks for the great information.
Happy Trails...

Bill -
As the "Ash Kicker" said - great info!
And as I'm sure the AK can attest to - having been in
the fire/rescue business for some thirty years - we are
ALL firm believers in "Murphy".
Now there are those who might say YOUR "incident" is a
rare occurrence, might never happen again -
but "Murphy" can strike twice:
Although not "electrical", many years ago I responded
to a Medical Aid incident where a young guy was working on an
early Mustang (V8). While standing next to the open hood
checking out the (high-reving) engine a fan blade detached
from the fan - with fatal results.
Thought what an unfortunate one-of-a-kind thing. Guy was in the
wrong place, wrong time . . . . . until I went out on another about
10 years later! [With the same outcome].

Quote: Oh yea, Friday evening turned into a neighborhood get together. When the electrician said “oops, 230 volts…” I sped off to the neighbors like Paul Revere yelling “turn off your power, turn off your power” and knocking off breakers at their pedestals as I came to them. But I was not as fast as I used to be and could not beat the electricity nor the damage it did.
Your win big points on your efforts...but it's hard to outrun Randy Kilowatt! I'd paid good money to have seen that! ![biggrin [emoticon]](http://www.rv.net/sharedcontent/cfb/images/biggrin.gif)
Electricity 186,000 miles per second....fastest human runner I think is around 15 MPH.
Your point is well taken though...PROTECT YOURSELF!

I bought my 50 amp surge guard primarily for my extended trips. I figure whether or not someone covers the cost of my electrical devices that are damaged, will not help much if I am 500 miles and 2 days into a 5,000 mile, 2 month trip.
Hopefully the surge guard will adequately protect the system so I don't have to abort part way into a long planned trip.

I like to amortize stuff over time - just for the fun of it.
So - if your surge guard cost $400. that's about $1.10 a day
for a year - way less than a fancy cup of "joe" at Starbucks!
[Or even a "standard" one at your favorite breakfast spot!]
Why "only" a year? Well, most surge "devices" like
EMS have a one year warranty.
[As I recall, Hughes Autoformer is 3 yrs]
Anyway, even if you had to buy another on day 366 . . . not really that
big of a deal - vs the grief that Bill talks about.

Keep sending readers back to Bill's original post.
Needs a "bump" back to the front - and hopefully a
transfer to the Tech Forum - where lots of surge
protector and voltage booster questions seem to show up.
So . . here's the "bump".

I don't understand how they could get 220V through a single leg 30A breaker. I can understand the 50A breakers because they are a 2 leg breakers, but the 30A breakers are singles. To get 220V, you need 2 legs of 110V coming off of opposite sides of the panel.
I guess I'm just confused on how they did it.

Reminds me when my dealer was installing my 3000w inverter and it went up in sparks and smoke, after he plugged into shore power, when he said "I should have installed an ATS!"

Hi All.
We have done exactly that. We have protected our self a long time ago with a good 30 amp Surge Protector. And it has done exactly as it has stated it would.
It has protected us sever times since we have had it. On one trip, about 7 pm o our second night, the power dropped to 89 volts. And it stayed that for the entire eveniong through the night. At 7:30 am the next morning, I went and complained to the owner of the campground. He was very nce about it, and said that he has had nothing but trouble since he bought the campground. It was built back in the 40s. He offered to not charge us for our third nght. As we had planned on staying there for three nights. We thanked him, but declined, and we cut our stay by one day and moved on down the coast. A good Surge Protector is spendy, but they are worth every penney. Yes, you might go for many many years and never need one. But it only takes one time to fry everything also. Lets do some simple math, your RV cost how many thousands of dollars ? Our good Surge Protector cost us $250.00 dollars. I'd call it pretty cheap insurance to protect your investment. Ours has already paid for it self, a couple times over. We also never hook up to any power sorce, with out testing the power first. That is the first thing that we do when we get to any site before doing any set up at all. We would buy one again in a second. We are very pleased with our Surge protector. Happy Camping, Dan & Jill

This is such an important issue!!! Would someone make a concise list of electrical protection devices and post it? That would be very helpful to newbies like me! I scour the posts for knowledge... and my butt bones would be happier with a list! Less time sitting!
thanks,
