For those of you leaving for Alaska soon or are already on you way, here are some pics from our first trip of the summer season. Some buddies from work and I went on our annual early season fishing trip. The fishing was pretty good for halibut but we had no luck with the kings.
I met my wife and some friends in Portage at Williwaw Campground for the rest of the weekend. We had a beautiful relaxing weekend that we all needed after the long winter we just endured.
I didn't take many pics on our fishing trip. But here are a couple from our campsite at Deep Creek State Park Camprounds. They are the morning we went fishing.

This was the best weather we've ever had camping in Portage.

Our dogs, Knight and Dawson, having fun in Portage Lake. Dawson on the right is a sled dog that was rescued from its owner back in January. We adopted him from Animal Control back in April. This was his first camping trip. He has been great.

I was the last to leave the Campsite.

This was the view of Turnagain Arm headed up the Seward HWY back to Anchorage.

It was a wonderful weekend to start the season off. Hope some of you make it up here and get to enjoy!

Excellent photos! Bring back fond memories of our 7-week trip to those same areas in 1986. As Tom Bodette said in his book "The End of the Road", Spring is here. We had our first Winnebago sighting of the year. Tom's other book, "Big Garage on Clearshot" is the next in the series and also a very good. Hope you've read them both.
See you soon on the American Road !

Wow! Great pics! We've got to get back up there.
Question: I don't see Portage Glacier as I remember it, and where are the little 'bergs floating in Portage Lake?

Sign Up not needed...Roger just load up everything and head north. It's only about a 4/5 day drive from your neck of the woods.

All of the glaciers have receded quite a bit the last 50 years. To see Portage Glacier you have to take a boat across the lake or view from the other side of the lake. I don't think the glaciers even come down to the lake now. There aren't too many icebergs floating around anymore.
Thanks,

Hi Chad,
It looks like one day it is winter (8 months)and the next day it is summer (4 months). Does it really switch that fast?
