Over the 4th of July we drove the Denali Highway and the McCarthy Road to the old town of McCarthy, Alaska and the Kennicott Mine in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. You can check it out here: 4th of July Trip

How did you make out with tires? We took the tour in rather than try to drive it with the big Class A, and were very glad we did. The tour folks used a 15 passenger Ford 350 van with good tires. Going in was fine but coming out we hit 3 of those infamous railroad spikes. Unfortunately, we only had 2 spares, so we had some waiting along the road. No real problem, just an adventure.

Cool trip in. I presume you used the 4wheelers over the river at McCarthey? The 4th of July, the glacier should have had the river running full, and the vehicle bridge didn't look to firm when we saw it.

Great pix of a very neat trip. That road was fun to drive with our TC altho never knew what's around the bend. Luckily we didn't "find" any of the old spikes and the tires fared very well. We stayed at the far end of the parking lot, no hookups but cheap. The Kennicott Mine mill complex is very much worth seeing. Also, a trip off the road at Chitina and visit with fish wheel people was worth doing. We were given full filets off of 2 copper rived red salmon (sockeye) reputed to be the best of the Alaskan salmon.

We took the van tour. We happened to be in McCarthy on July 4, 2000 and saw their parade. Coolest and most unusual parade we've ever seen. Anybody there who wanted to be in the parade just got in it.

Sweet! Love to go to Alaska but will need to set aside funding for an extended trip like that. July 4th? Took a while to post this, better late than never.
