I am new to this forum, and have a question. It seem there is a lot of people who know a lot about TC's so I am confident someone can help me.

I have an 86 Western Wilderness Alpine 9' TC, and just recently purchased a new to me 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW. I have put on Tork Lift tie downs and am now trying to wire the truck for the camper. My question is, my camper has 8 wires coming from it. I know the two 8 gauge wires are charge wires for the batery, and the four wires for the tail lights, but there is another black wire and an orange witch I have no idea where they go. All wires appeared to have been hooked up to the last truck but I did not wire it, and no longer have it to see where they went. Any help will be appreciated.

I am also upgrading to a 7 pin flat plug, but have 8 wires to deal with. HELP

I have no idea what the 8th would be.

Mine was wired up with the return of the battery charge and the return of the tail lights separate to the plugs until I redid the pigtail.

IIRC the orange was backup.

My first thought was the black could be a ground, I guess I may need to get an ohm meeter out and check it.

One could be a brake wire for a trailer.

2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. Except these are coming from the camper, and there is no trailer plug in the camper.

When in doubt, trace it out.

After unwraping the tape, the black was not attached to anything but appeared it could have pulled out of a splice. The pig tail from the camper has a flat 8 plug (four on top, and four on bottom). The wires were spliced sometime in the past and a 9 round plug was attached to the truck end. The wire colors are as follows from the camper plug
White 8 gauge
black 8 gauge
orange 16 ga
black 12 ga
yellow 16 ga
green 16 ga
red 16 ga
brown 16 ga

There is obviously two terminals which have never been used on the 9 pin plug, so this also leads me to believe the black 12 gauge was either not hooked up, or spliced in with one of the others in the splice mess. After examining the that splice mess, the only one it appears it could have been with was the black 8 gauge wire.

common 7 pin http://www.marksrv.com/wiring.htm,
1 white 10ga common ground (-)
2 blue 12ga electric brake
3 green 14ga tail/running lights
4 black 10ga battery charge (+)
5 red 14ga left turn/stop
6 brown 14ga right turn/stop
7 yellow 14ga auxiliary/back up
common 6 pin is different http://www.marksrv.com/6way.htm

Would be nice if over the years a standard color code was used-even now it depends on the style & pin count for color coding- Vehicles thats a whole different ball game -they even throw in stripped wires

your camper, Theres really no telling, Id also ground camper & trace or use a +12v fused wired and see what comes on
But...
White 8 gauge I would guess s/b 12v ground
black 8 gauge I would guess s/b 12v positive (charge line)

black 12 ga I would guess ???? (black on camper is normally positive?)
possibly dedicated refer wire?

orange 16 ga I would guess ???

assume these are light wires
yellow 16 ga I would guess s/b backup (or left turn/stop)
green 16 ga I would guess s/b tail/clearance (or right turn/stop)
red 16 ga I would guess / should be left turn/stop (or left right/turn)
brown 16 ga I would guess/ should be right turn/stop (or tail/clearance)

I did stumble on this
http://irv2.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7436094452/m/5641021224
a Starcraft t/c with the flat rectangle 8 pin (though only 7 wires were used)
Again your going to have to test to really get it right. just my best guess Good luck

Ok, I found the original wire diagram for this system, so just for future reference, in case anyone else ever runs into this problem, this is how this type of plug hooks up.

Yellow - back up
Green - Tail / running lights
Red - L turn
Brown - R turn
White - 8 gauge ground
Black - 8 gauge Batt
Orange - Refer Tag
Black - 12 gauge Aux

This is straight from the owners manual.
