This summer we stayed near home and just did short trips. Though one trip was to Steens Mountain in southeastern Oregon.
Here are some pictures of our travels.

A nice camp and swim area on the coast of Washington. Facing the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Backyard birds on the wifes new bird feeder.

Mount Rainier from Paradise. Yes Paradise.

Mount Rainier and a small stream.

Now a quick move down to mount St. Hellens. This is what Spirit Lake looks like these days.
Notice the 29 year old floating blowndown logs still floating at the upper edge of the lake. And a bunch in the lower part.

Camper in the Windy Ridge parking lot. Spent a night there no one bothered me.
Waiting on the light I was treated to Elk bulging at dusk and again at dawn.
That hill side was Sterilized in the eruption not much has grown back in 29 years.

Mount Saint Hellens from Windy Ridge.
That mound in the center is nature rebuilding the mountain.
However it has stopped for now.
There is a green ridge line in front of the mountain.

Trail to Meta Lake. Notice the growth here in 29 years.
The wild flowers were special on this trip.

Meta Lake.
I kind of like this picture.

What did I tell you about the wild flowers?

Things are still in motion on the road to Windy Ridge.
A washout this last winter.

Now on to Olympia Wa. and the Labor Day weekend tug boat races.
Tug boats of all sizes were on hand for the fun.
Boy did it ever rain.

The Port of Olympia and more tugs.

Now on to Oregon.
Rain in Olympia then 90 degree heat in central Oregon.
Campers are good for shade as well.

Near the top of Steens Mountian in Southeast Oregon.
That notch on the right is called the gunsight.
Those are large Aspen trees down in that very deep U shaped valley.
Standing there and looking down is something else, very cool.

From near the top of Steens Mountain looking down over a mile to the Alvord Desert.

Son looking at the Alvord Desert.
Hey water will bring crops. Notice the green crop circle.

Looks like a good place to stop for lunch.

I guess I kind of like the Great Northwest.
Have fun looking at them, but I bet I had more fun taking them!!!!

Cool pictures....I've been to every one of those! I especially love the Steens when they have snow on them....lots of snow!

Nice pictures, thanks for posting them. I've got to get back to the Steens -- it's been years.

Great Pics.

Were all those shots from road accesible locations, or was some hiking done to get to the great vantage point?

I noticed the sandals your son was wearing so I'm assuming you can drive right up to those beautiful views, or your son is one heck of a hiker!!!

Thanks again for the great pics.

We haven't seen Mt Saint Helens since 1991 and the area looks pretty much the same. Thanks for sharing.
