We take the route Am Eagle suggested when wanting to get over by Amarillo as well (south on I-27 @ Amarillo to US 60 at Canyon. This takes you thru Hereford Tx to Clovis NM. Then take US 70 thru Portales to Las Cruces). Good roads, wide mostly, not too curvy until closer to Ruidoso. We use the US 54 route to get up to Santa Fe or Las Vegas (Not to Santa Rosa for LV) or Tucumcari. With your rig, the grades will not be a problem. If you like Horses & Museums, this might be NEAT. Also by Canyon, there is Palo Duro Canyon. I have not made it two either of these, but they are on our to do list.

If wanting to go by the Valley of Fires, turn off US 70 onto US 380 to go to Lincoln....History. This is the area where Smokey Bear was found. US 380 goes over to the Valley of Fires & Route 54. By Las Cruces there is more Billy the Kid History in Mesilla.

More info on planning your trip-as you come into Amarillo by the airport you can get off of I40 on Lakeside Drive. Lakeside Drive takes you around Amarillo and connects with the road to Canyon Texas. At Canyon you take the exit to Clovis, NM. At the first stoplight as you go into Clovis (Norris Street), turn left, go across the RR tracks and at the first intersection (Brady Street) turn right. At the next stoplight, turn left and you are on US70. This keeps you out of traffic in Clovis. Next is Portales and then Elida (watch your speed, usually the city policeman is waiting for speeders). At Roswell, you can take the truck bypass and get back on US 70 west of town. Nice scenery after you drop off into the Hondo Valley, steep grade (Apache Summit) southwest of Ruidoso but shouldn't be any problem. At Tularosa you get on US54 and can also take the truck bypass at Alamogordo. Another steep grade northeast of Las Cruces (Saint Augustine Pass) but it has passing lanes and shouldn't be a problem. All of the roads mentioned above are 4 lane except for Lakeside Drive and the Roswell truck bypass. Enjoy your trip!
