Personally, to save yourself the 550 dragging the Jeep issues, I'd base camp in Durango and go up the 550 on excursions to Ouray and hit the many incredible jeep trails using Durango as base.

Then you can light out of there for Utah. On that note, whil I love the trails and Utah in general, i'd skip it and spend that time in Black Hills. I know with a Jeep that is a sin, but you can get lotsa Jeep trail time in the San Juans. Utah will be very hot. So much to see and do in the Black Hills. Just my preference.

Great trip idea! As a matter of fact, we are leaving from Ormond Beach first week of June heading in some of the same directions. We are doing our retirement trip and expect to send about 2 months seeing the sites. Yosemite and Yellowstone are both on the agenda. We are planning a more southerly route out, then return via a northerly route through North and South Dokota then down through Nerbraska (family) and back home. Route planner indicating a little over 8,000 miles.
