We are heading for Yellowstone June 8th but want to see Mt Rushmore on the way there. Is Custer State Park a good place to stay for a couple of days while we are in the area? Which would be the best campground to stay in at Custer to see Mt Rushmore? We will be camping in a van and would like to have electric hookups if possible.Thanks.

We stayed in Custer SP at the Game Lodge cg. They have electric and bath houses with showers. We are a large class a, we needed a large site, and this cg was perfect. location - great. Enjoy your trip

custer state park is a great place to stay, very scenic.
I would stay at Game Lodge campground (water, dump station and elec hookups)
because it is closest to a very scenic route to Mt. Rushmore.
from the campground, go east and then north on highway 16A.
it circles around to highway 244 and Mt. Rushmore.
the park will have a map showing the roads.
when you continue on west to yellowstone, you can take 16 west out of Custer over to Newcastle, WY and then head in whichever direction you were planning to go.

Get your reservations in early. We tried 4 months before arrival and couldn't get in.

If the State park does not work out for you I suggest Rafter J Bar RV resort nearby.

Either way have dinner at the Alpine Inn in Hill City, but only if you like an excellent Filet Mignon at an unbelievable price'.

All the campgrounds in CSP are great. We volunteered at that park for the two years prior to electric being installed. I would be more concerned about getting a site with electric than I would getting into a specific campground. Everything else being equal, Game Lodge is more in the center of things. Allow enough time to really see this park, it is awesome, especially the wild game including free ranging bison.

A stop over in Black Hills is a great idea and really helps with breaking up the trip. We made the trip to Yellowstone a few years ago from Michigan and stopped for a couple day in the Black Hills, sorry can't help you on camp site, hoteled it for a couple of day (Pop up camper at the time). My family loved Custer, will be doing that trip again for sure. Have Fun.

When went to YNP, we stopped for few days at Custer SP, stayed at Blue Bell. That was 2004. We went back to Custer this summer, stayed at Stockade Lake. We enjoyed both visits. The visit this year did not see as much wildlife. Stockade Lake cg is a bit hilling, so we did struggle some getting into our site. But was a quiet cg, close to the town of Custer.
