I would second philipsburg for sapphire panning we have been to gem mountain twice now and alway came away with a little bag of gems. The grandkids loved the place. They do have a small CG with out any hookups you can use for free while panning. We also enjoyed the FS camps at Georgetown lake. If you find yourself in Missoula a tour of the smokejumper base is offered. The
rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is also there and has a nice exhibit area.

Note that Bannack, Coolidge, Big Hole National Battlefield, Crystal Park, Elkhorn Hot Springs, Wise River (fly fishing) and Phillipsburg are all located close together in SW MT. Too much for just an overnight stop, but you could take it in in two busy days.

For the outdoorsman, western MT has so much to offer year round.
