Did that in reverse. I'd do #3.

Months later...

As we are making final preps to the rig (dang hot water heater is out and one small leak in a hose I had replaced last winter) I have been reconsidering doing route #3 in a single day...

Question:

Option #1. Break up the trip into two small days, visit Devils Tower and overnight it at Buffalo or Cody (lose 1 day off of 6 planned days in Yellowstone)

Option #2. Drive it in a single day (500 miles) and get the most out of the 6 planned days in Yellowstone.

Sorry for the late reply. I'd go with option 1. Devils Tower is pretty interesting to see specially since you are already up in the area, and as others have said 5 days in Yellowstone is plenty enough.

We plan on makeing just the opposite trip. Yellowstone to Hill City. My plan it to take 16 through Cody, Graybull, Worland, Ten Sheep into Buffalo.

You might consider a 4th option. Drop down to Casper and take 26 west to Shoshoni. Then turn north on 20 through the Wind River Gorge to Thermopolis. Turn northwest on 120 which will take you to Cody. This is a very easy route as it avoids all the mountain driving. There are also several nice campgrounds along the way. It is all very well maintained 2 lane highways.

I suggest option #1. You can "see" YS in two (2) days, or you can hike it for 2 years.
