We stay in the Mission RV Park mainly because it is a Passport America park.

In the El Paso area, we stay just across the NM border at El Paso West RV Park, in Antony, NM. It adjoins a golf course. We never saw any park in El Paso we wanted to stay in.

Amen! I have tried a few in the El Paso area and they were all substandard, even if we stopped only to rest for the nights without any hookups. One on the east side of town on I-10, which was a Passport America site, had an interesting wake up system, gunfire at 3:00 AM followed by sirens. Just lovely.

Mission RV Park is a big one, pretty nice for one, not super fancy and is on the east side of El Paso as you enter on I-10. Not a great distance to the Convention Center which is kind of in the old down town, western part of down town, I'd say. A lot of congested traffic between the two places for sure. Western Skys RV Park is on the west side of El Paso and then north into New Mexico, out in the sticks, just off I-10, a small place, nothing at all fancy close to the Vado exit. Nothing much around it but desert, but interstate is close, two truck stops across interstate. Exit 155 and the TX/NM state line is at about 163, or O mile marker for TX, and the exit for the Convention Center would exit 19, I believe. About 27 miles, busy at times, but not as congested IMHO. Mission RV is at Exit 35, therefore it is about 16 miles.

There is another RV park near the NM/TX state line, American RV @ the Camping World, get off on Exit 2 drive about a mile to it. This is what someone wrote about it, "This is a gravel parking lot. There are no restrooms or showers or even a building of any kind. The office is housed in a converted shipping container. However, the Wi-Fi is free and fast. They will also let you wash your RV at your site. We liked the place so much we extended our overnight stop to a second night and made a work day. Simple grocery and fuel and LP nearby. The campground is directly behind a Camping World. We would overnight here anytime." I would say it is about 19 miles from the Convention Center.

El Paso West RV Park I am not familar with. Seems to be in Anthony, NM. Nor, I'm I familar with Road Runner RV Park but it appears to be the closest to the Canvention Center.

Oh, yes, there maybe a few RV sites at The Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, I'd call them to be sure. [emoticon] Get off at Exit 13.

Depends on what you like and need. As for safety, Western Skys is out by itself, should be safe. IMHO. The American should be as well, it has a high fence around it. These two in Las Cruces would be safe as well, IMHO. Hacienda RV & Siesta RV Park, but would be a long drive to El Paso. Many liked the one in Anthony, NM. A small town, with some gang problems, but every town in the southwest will have them. Mainly does not effect most of us not in the gangs and not living in their areas. I am guessing it would not be a problem in RV park in Anthony.

However, a week or so ago, a young man (21 yrs old) traveling alone was killed by 3 teens, 15 16 and 18, just inside of New Mexico from El Paso....some jerk gang-bangers wanted money. Really sad. He was on his way from San Antonio TX to San Diego CA. Gang-bangers from the very small town of Anthony NM or was it TX the place is on the state line. The rest area is a little deserted, but just across from the town, believe it was the NM Anthony. It can happen, not an everyday happening but it can at times. Newspaper Report
From this report he was taken not from the Anthony Rest area and visitor center but the rest area above Las Cruces on the west mesa. But this next report has it at the Anthony rest stop/visitor center with makes more sense, where the car was found. Expanded Report

Wanted to warn people to be deligent when we stop at rest stops, gas stations and even Wally World or at campgrounds in strange cities. Not to scare you or anyone. It is a dangerous world we live in, if we cross path with someone with evil in their heart(s). Don't NOT travel, just be careful.

Consider your surroundings carefully and if you feel uncomfortable with the area, move somewhere else. I feel comfortable when there are one or two (more so if more) RVs are overnighting at a location.

I live here, have for almost 40 yrs, and taught in the high schools here for most of that time. I still feel safe, but cautious when in some neighborhoods and some areas.

I've pulled into Mission RV and it seemed safe as well. I seem to remember a wall around it, but can't be sure. Never stayed in any of them, except the Las Cruces KOA back in '71 when I came to interview for a position. It is still pretty nice location on a hillside off the mesa, not sure of facilites (Last to reveiw it said, "This was a very nice campground. Level sites and concrete pads for easy pull through and setup. Clean, hot showers with privacy. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel." Dec'09). Roadrunner RV maybe safe as well, not been by it as far as I can remember, but it is close to downtown [emoticon].

People do overnight at the Texas Visitor Center & Rest Area in Anthony, TX area, an exit just past the Anthony exit East bound or Anthony exit & make a U-turn at over pass West bound then rest area exit. Vistor Center has a lot of parking, it overlooks the valley of the Rio Grande and La Tuna Fed Minn.Security Prison. Also at Anthony exit, Flying J Truckstop allows overnighting Simular Post. And just into NM on I-10 there is the NM VisitorCenter/Rest Area which it seems one can overnight as well. But it would not be as easy to get back to El Paso from, but not much out of the way to do so. Next exit has an over pass.

We get most of our news from El Paso TV stations, I have never heard of any reports of violence in any of the RV parks at least none which made the news.[emoticon]

I am going to assume you have a toad,. and if you do, the El Paso west rv park in Anthony is by far the best, when you use the word safe. However, out there safe is relative. I sure wouldnt stay in any , within the city.

We are in El Paso right now, although our 5th wheel is at Camping World getting fixed.
American RV Park is right next to Camping world, and is, indeed, just a parking lot with hookups. google map campingworld and you will see it.
we did stay for 2 weeks at Gaslight Square RV Park-
(its actually in Canutillo, close to EP )
http://www.gaslightsquaremhc.com/
It is mostly mobile homes but has a separate section for RVs, which is fenced in. It has some pull through sites and 50 amp. they have trees, the wifi was a little intermittent but overall we would stay there again.
good luck!

I've stayed at Cotton Valley, behind the gas station at the Clint exit, east of El Paso.

I considered it safe, it is one of those places where the management lives on the premises, about half the sites are occupied by semi-permanent residents and transient workers. It is not pretty, it is a rural small town in the desert where ranchers and working people live.

Whether or not it is sub-standard, depends on your standards. I thought it was pretty good by western working class standards, but it certainly isn't a motorcoach resort.

There are other places closer to the city, for your business in the city, but they will not be as quiet, and you may be less comfortable with the surroundings in a commercial-industrial fringe area. We looked at Mission RV Park on our way through, but I didn't like the location (by a loop interchange in an industrial area), and went on out to the sticks where I am more comfortable and have a better chance of seeing starry skies.

I am assuming when you say "campground" you are instead looking for a place to park a self-contained RV. If you actually need a campground, I am not aware of any that are very close to El Paso.
