About this time of year we are ready to get away from the snow and find some warmer weather. So off we went. We headed south in US 395 from the Reno area.
Our first stop was at Conway summit. Here is the view looking south with fog over Mono Lake and the June Lake ski area in the distance.

Here is snow depth along the road near Mammoth Lakes. The road was clear though.

Our first stop was Silverwood Lake recreation area. It is about 15 miles south of Cajon Pass on CA 138 at about 4000 ft. in the San Bernadino mountains.
And we thought we would escape the snow!

We took a hike in the morning and I was going to fish in the afternoon but it started raining and sleeting.

Next off to the Anza Borrego desert about 90 miles south of Palm Springs and 50 miles west of the Salton Sea. Along I 10 there are several large wind farms.

Finally some sun and warm weather at Borrego Palm cg.

Great view of the Santa Rosa Mountains with Coyote Mtn in the foreground.

We took a hike up Borrego Palm canyon to the palm oasis. It was still too early for wildflowers.

However the ocotillo were in bloom from the recent rains.

The palm oasis.

Lots of water. The ranger said they had 3 years worth of rain in 2 days.

On the way back we climbed a hill for a view of the campground.
The green in the distance is citrus groves.

The next day we drove to Font's Point for a view of the badlands.

In the distance is old Mexico
[image]

The road goes several miles up a sandy wash - 4 wheel drive recommended.

One of the neat things about Borrego Springs is a series of metal sculptures featuring ancient animals that roamed the area during the Pliestocene and Miocene areas. They are funded by Dennis Avery (Avery Labels) and are the work of artist Ricardo Breceda. in all there are over 30 sculptures.

Here is Judy and I with a Gomphotherium.

A moonrise and we are off to...

Carpenteria State Beach just south of Santa Barbara, CA

View out the back window.

Miles of beach. All the sand has been washed away by the recent storms.

A harbor seal preserve
[image]

In the shadow of the pier that services the offshore drilling rigs. They are the 3 square dots on the horizon.

Rosie liked hiding in the iceplant.

Great hiking and bikepaths.

Along the cliffs with lovely vistas

And back to the snow [emoticon]

We saw this fellow could it be Wayne, Sleepy or Brad? [emoticon]

Thanks for looking in.

Nice pictures.

I should take a drive to Anza Borrego desert, it is only about 90 miles from where I live. It is really nice this time of year, and the flowers should be great this year.

Thanks for sharing,

Fred.

Love the post, always looking for good idea's in SC. That Carpenteria State Beach sure looks interesting. I also enjoyed seeing what the roads look like in the winter south of Reno. Thanks for the info.
