Well it's Feb and DW wanted to go somewhere warm. She had the week off so we decided to head South from home, near Sacramento, and do some exploring and hiking down in the Southern Desert area. We opted to head over to 395 and go down that way....We headed over to Monitor pass.....OOOOPS.....Closed for the Winter....We had to do a loop around but it wasn't too far.

Here's what we saw on the way down to the Barstow area:

The mountain range about 30 miles North of Mono Lake

395 about 30 miles north of Bishop....Whazat white stuff???

Our first destination....Owl Canyon Campground in the Rainbow Basin

Where we camped. There was the host and 2 other TT's there out of about 30 sites. Quiet as a mouse!!!

We took the scenic loop road...very narrow in spots but beautiful

We went to the Early Man discovery site...Tools used by man have been found here dating back between 50,000 and 200,000 years...

A cave/tube...about 100' long...flashlight required...Acutally open on the other end.

Well as you can see, we didn't make it to Joshua tree. We just stayed in Owl Canyon Campground and ran out of time....

We wanted to do a loop of the whole basin....Here is a link of the trail we wanted to do....Google Maps:

I couldn't get the link to work....Maybe the link address is too big...

If your interested in the loop pm me and I will send it to ya..

Wow! Love the photos. Thanks for the report.

For those of us without toads, could a TC the size of yours make it on that scenic loop road?

I don't think you would have a problem....It is one way though...

Here's what the BLM says:

The Fossil Canyon Loop Road is an interesting route for vehicle touring. Keep in mind that this one-way narrow dirt road is best driven with a high clearance or four-wheel drive vehicles.
FOSSIL CANYON LOOP ROAD IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES AND SHOULD NEVER BE ATTEMPTED BY MOTORHOMES OR VEHICLES TOWING TRAILERS.

Several other things to see if you decide to go into the area...

Here's one that's fun!!! It's about 10-15 miles from Owl Canyon CG.

If you plan on going back to the area you might want to hit
Inscription Canyon

By the way, great pictures!

I was wanting to go there and up to Superior Dry Lake. I was attempting to get there via Hinkley...I got tangled up on some of the roads and ran out of time as I started too late in the day. I was using gps topo. Some of the roads were inaccurate.
