Watch for the skeleton man walking the skeleton dinosaur on the north side of I-90 before you get to the Badlands in SD. The town of Deadwood, SD. The Vore Buffalo Jump on the north side of I-90 shortly after you enter Wyoming.

1880's town along I-90, the car museum at Murdo,S.D. There is a Minuteman silo museum at exit 127 of I-90, an air and space museum at Ellsworth, AFB east of Rapid City. Have a nice trip.

Been there; bought a T-shirt [emoticon] !

If you're into bikes at all and you'll be around the Mt. Rushmore area at the beginning of August there's also the 70th Anniversary Sturgis Rally. Even if you don't ride you can take in the "atmosphere"!

Good idea, we could not get on a tour, because we had not done so...

Also if you want to go through either Wind Cave or Jewell Cave , I would call ahead, many days in fact...

Well, thanks everyone! You make me proud of my home state.

Here are a few other things I (in case your head isn't swimming with ideas already): [emoticon]

Sioux Falls: Falls Park is a lovely place to stretch your legs or have a picnic. It's right downtown.

Chamberlain: the Akta Lakota Museum is unique. An easy 60-90 minute stop. And Chamberlain is a good place to take in the Missouri River.

Near Rapid City: Rushmore Cave (privately owned) has a fun tour. Lots to see.

In Rapid City: the Journey Museum

The Doll Museum in Mitchell is closed now. We were at the Corn Palace in August and the Doll Museum building was for sale.

I heartily second the idea of visiting the House on the Rock (near Spring Green, WI). We have taken many of my wife's family members there---all have enjoyed it. Being a true cheesehead, I would also recommend visiting Carr Valley Cheese on County G in Sauk County
(http://www.carrvalleycheese.com/) or Cedar Grove Cheese just off County B in Sauk County as well (http://www.cedargrovecheese.com/). They would be interesting for anyone...

I agree with all the excellent comments and suggestions. Two more:
1. Minute Man Missle Silo NHS (Right outside Badlands NP)
2. Wind Cave's explorer tour for kids.
My 8 and 10 year old loved these two tours
