We took our annual Death Valley trip the other week. We visited Sidewinder canyon, Fall canyon, Coffin Peak and the ghost town of Rhyolite, NV. We then went south to the Kelso Sand Dunes area of the Mojave Preserve. So I will break this post up into several pieces.

Death Valley received no rain from Feb 2009 until Jan 2010 when it got almost 3 years worth of rain in one month. As a result the wildflowers were not blooming. They are expected in late March or early April (so go and see them). Also as a result of the rain many park roads are closed. Most notably Titus canyon, Saline Valley and even the Beatty cutoff. If you go check with the visitor's center as road conditions change daily.

We drive down US 395 from Reno to Lone Pine then into the park. Some snow near Mammoth Lakes, CA where we took a break.

And here we are relaxing

Our 1st hike was up Sidewinder Canyon. Sidewinder is located south of Badwater just before Mormon Point. It is a relatively easy 5 mile hike. The best thing is that there a 3 slot canyons to explore.

Lake Manly at Badwater with a nice relection.

Don't want to be here when it rains

The next day was a jaunt from Zabriskie Point down Golden canyon and back up Gower Gulch thru the Zabiskie Badlands.

Excellent pictures and you guys must have had a really good time. Sorry we missed you at Texas Springs and we stayed at Mesquite CG, just a few weeks before you folks were there. Death Valley is a great place to visit in the winter time, and your pictures prove it.

Wow, that place is really dry! Sure hard to imagine wildflowers blooming there. I'll be looking forward to Part 2 [emoticon]

Gosh Al,

I can't believe how GOOD all that dirt and rock looks.... And to see y'all lounging around in shorts is very uplifting. Thank you for sharing.

Very nice report. Look forward to the rest. I noticed a dog in one pic. Did you take him/her on your hikes?
