The second installment.

Coffin Peak is located just south of Dante's View. It is a hike along the ridgeline with a lovely view of the Valley, Badwater,Lake Manly, Mormon Point, the Panamint Mountains and Telescope Peak. There is no defined trail but since it is a ridgeline it is not a problem.

Along the way we came upon a flatrock with this inscription. I do not know if it is genuine or not. I have an inquiry into the Park.

Getting closer.

You are over 5500 feet elevation here. 37 deg. F when we climbed and even found some snow.

Next stop is the ghost town of Rhyolite. It is located just north of NV 374 between Beatty, NV and the east entrance to the Park. It is a good example, along with Leadfield on the Titus Canyon road, of a boom and bust town created by "Gold Fever". Gold was discovered on 1904. By 1908 it had a population of 10,000 and 2 railroads. In 1910 the mines failed and the population dropped to 675. Toaday it is under the protection of the BLM and houses one old hermit and a caretaker.

This is the Tom Kelly Bottle House. Recently restored.

And 76 year old Tom Kelly building it in 1906. He raffeled it off.

And now.

'nuff said.

Most of the ore was shipped out on one of 2 railroads. This is the Las Vegas and Tonopah station.

Is anyone else having problems with the pictures? All I see is a little box with a red x in it. What am I doing wrong?

Great follow-up to Part Uno. One day I would really like to visit some of these California desert locales, and guys like you and FishPoet are showing me the way. Thanks for the "over-the-shoulder" tour!

Thanks for sharing. Do any of you who hike the desert ever see rattlesnakes?
