Hi,

My family and I have just about made up our minds about getting a new 2010 Jayco 26bh when a raise comes through in a few weeks. We love the floorplan, and are set on it. I know other manufactures make similar models. I was wondering if anyone with experience with these other types such as the Hideout 26 B can comment if these other trailers have features which are better than the Jayco. Are these other trailers better values than the Jayco? Any insight would be appreciated?

The Hideout is made by the giant RV conglomerate Keystone. They make 24 brands of Trailers and are the 2nd largest corporate RV manufacturer after #1 Thor corporation.

Jayco is the 3rd largest RV manufacturer, and has been in business for 42 years, owned by the same family that started it. As far as features and value, I can only point out the differences and let you decide! Both the Jayco and the Hideout have the same type of construction (wood framed aluminum walled) and insulation (R-7). Both have a lot of "bang for the buck" value, and are terrific for families who are just beginning RVers!

The Hideout has cabinets made from wood veneer over a "Wood Core Cabinet Stile". Not that unusual for some brands. The Hideout has less cargo capacity, by about 500 lbs, and the Jayco weighs 500 lbs less dry.

Jayco has "solid wood cabinets, lumber core, real oak and cherrywood made in our own wood mill" and "crafted with screwed-stile construction like fine furniture". Not stapled and glued! The Jayco has a wardrobe cabinet in the bunk room, Keystone doesn't. Jayco has 4 leveling jacks standard and several more items standard that the Keystone has optional. And Jayco has enough pride and confidence in their RV's to have a 2 year warranty.

Check out a comparable brand, Coachmen Catalina 26BH. Same floor plan, 4579 dry, 28'7", same construction, and the Catalina line was a value line years ago, but was discontinued. Now after Forest River bought Coachmen, it's back and is "aggressivly priced" and a good value!

Good luck!

We have a Hideout 27B. My disclaimer #1: my wife's sister's husband's uncle owns a local dealership which sells pretty much only Keystone trailers, so he gave us a great price, and we had some obligation to buy from him (didn't want to see him at campouts w/ a trailer w/ someone else's name on it! j/k, but it is nice to help out friends and family when you can, and he gives us great service/advice in return, so...). So we looked at other brands somewhat, but were pretty well locked in to a Keystone trailer. The price break he gave us also made Jaycos and other brands pretty non-competitive price-wise -- we got ours for a several thousand less than comparables.

Disclaimer #2: we bought our trailer as a test model for us, something with an adequate floor plan that could be towed w/ the Suburban we already had, something that wouldn't break the bank, and would give us the chance to see if we liked/used it much or not (my wife didn't grow up camping a lot, so it took a little convincing as it was). I know too many people that spend tens of thousands on a new truck and trailer that stays in their driveway 360 days a year. So we wanted to make sure it was a hobby we'd enjoy as a family before sinking lots of money into it. I knew when we bought it that the Hideout wasn't a trailer we'd expect or need to last for 15 years of heavy use, and our dealer was upfront and honest about this fact as well -- I knew we'd either never use it and sell it or keep it parked for the occasional family gathering, or trade it in on a bigger and better model if we became dedicated RV'ers.

The Jayco you mention looks to be a very similar floor plan to our Hideout 27B. The good of our Hideout -- inexpensive; a great floor plan for our family so far (we have 5 and 3 yr old kids); we've had no failures or problems in probably 50+ nights camping since we purchased it new. I love that everyone has a dedicated bed that doesn't need to be put away in the morning. And there is plenty of convertible sleeping space when grandparents or someone else comes along. Did I mention it was cheap?!

Drawbacks: when our third child comes along in September, we'll probably need to go to something bigger -- we would like a slide to give a little more living space; Hideout quality probably isn't the best (when you by the budget brand of the nation's largest trailer mfgr, you can't expect too much!). Jayco has a reputation of being higher quality, although in fairness, we haven't had a single problem with our Hideout. But if you're buying for the long term, and prices are close, I'd expect the Jayco to last longer. One floor plan issue w/ our 27B -- our "3 bunks" are really just 2 bunks and a pad on the floor constituting the 3rd bunk. I can sleep comfortably on the middle (I'm 6'0", 225 lbs), the top is a little tight and not enough fresh air (no window, just a skylight), but ok. The bottom bunk (aka "the cave") is unusable for an adult (very tight, no window or vent). My kids take turns over who gets to sleep in "the cave" -- they love it!- but it would be unsuitable for bigger people to regularly use. I'd prefer the twin/single bunk setup of the Jayco or quad bunks that are offered in slightly bigger models. The bathroom and bedroom are very small -- just enough room to maneuver to get dressed, etc. But we like to spend most of our time outside, anyway -- the trailer is just a place to sleep for us.

I've looked at both models in search of our floorplan (the bunkhouse style with a slide in the bunkhouse too)..

The Hornet line itself is supposedly of better quality than the Hornet Hideouts...just an FYI..

However...in the end Jayco will be the superior build..

However Tystevens brings up a GREAT point...depending on HOW you're going to use it, if the Hideout is cheaper...does it necessarily matter that it's of a lower quality?

That's a question you have to ask yourself...

I just picked up our 2010 unit at the Jayco factory in Nov. With that said, They allowed me to see every step of the assembly line for the TT's and MH's. The workmanship is unbelieveable. The woodwork and cabinets are all made of real/solid wood and hand made. QA is present at each and every step of the procedure. I was impressed to say the least. When you ask for an opinion that is what you get, the only one that can truely answer your question about what you should get is you. No one else has to live with your choice...you do.
Once you make your decision enjoy, life is to short.
Best of luck!!!!

We did all the research, compared apples to apples, read many many online posts and glossy brochures and the best deal ( IMHO ) was the Jayco.
That very model is sitting in our driveway right now, looking all shinny and new :-)

We bought a Jayco 2009 26 BH just over a year ago. It has been great! We try to go camping at least once/month but haven't made it quite that much. It tows easy and the quality seems very good.

I'd get it again.

I don't know anything about the hideout, so all I can say is both our Jayco's serves us extremely well. Our 29BHS camped all of Alberta without a glitch, and is now serving its new owners in Gander very nicely.

So I am partial to the Jayco.
