What are some of the Must See Places in and around Colorado Springs besides Garden of the Gods?

Has anyone been to Royal Gorge and can give us their view?

Hubby won't go over the gorge in that gondola, period, no discussion allowed, as I already talked to him and he said NO!

I looked at the Tourism Site and glanced thru some places, but wondered what adults would consider the places to not miss in the area .. we leave here on the 21st .. yes, we are here in an rv park from where we base out of to tour some places in addition to visiting with hubby's sister.

We enjoyed the drive up from Las Vegas, NM although it was a long drive with the side trips we took, including Fort Union.

Last fall, we drove out to the Royal Gorge. The place had the atmosphere of a sleazy carnival rip off place. Even in the parking lot. We just got back in the pick up and continued on our drive up the Arkansas River which is a beautiful scenic drive.

Royal Gorge from the top on the bridge to nowwhere
Royal Gorge from the bottom by train
Molly Kathleen gold mine
Manitou Springs-the town
Cripple Creek-the town
Pikes Peak cog railroad and/or drive to the top
Cliff dwelling caves (or something like that)
Flying W barbeque and show (or something like that)
Drive to Mueller State Park

Hmm, I think that's all we did.

He won't go over the Royal Gorge in the gondola? Oh come on, there's nothing to it....as long as you bring a parachute.

In addition to the above, don't forget to tour the Air Force Academy and check Cheyenne Mountain to see if they have a NORAD tour running. We also like the Mining Museum off I-25, just north of CS. I second the Zoo. It's the highest in the country and there are some terrific exhibits. Our Giraffes are the best outside of Africa. The Olympic Training Center is also located here.

Royal Gorge is worth a stop (not sure where johnna was as there is no carnival or ripoffs) and near there is Buckskin Joe's. A western "town", it's worth a few hours and some John Wayne movies were shot there. They also have a small train ride to the gorge edge. If you have kids, they'll love it.

There's lots more, so here is a TripAdvisor list of local attractions.

In August 2007, we did a small family gathering above Colorado Springs. We enjoyed our trip to Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs area. We camped at South Meadows Campground of the Pike's Nat'l Forest just outside of Woodland Park a few miles. It was a very nice site, the Camp Hosts keep the place spotless. Drawbacks were the pit toilets but they were new and kept clean and no dump site exect down the road off a dirt road with a fee of $10. The $15 camping fee was nice. There are two other campgrounds in the area as well, also several private RV parks.

We enjoyed Manitou Springs, Garden of the Gods, the Cheyenne Mt. Zoo and visiting with our son and his family. They also went to Cripple Creek and did the cog train ride to Pike's Peak and a day fishing.

As a kid, I went with my parents to Colorado Springs. They also went to, hope I get this correct, Seven Sisters Falls, I remember it as being a neat place. But have not gone again. We also went to Royal Gorge and we have gone to it since. An OK place but yes a very tourist trap place. That was why it was built. One of the first built it and they will come places. Like Mount Rushmore. We made a run to the Air Force Academy years ago when our kids were small and to Santa Clause Land or some such place then as well. Ha!

A neat area with even more things to see and do.

We enjoyed stopping by Great Sand Dunes.
