Hi all, we are planning a trip to Roswell NM in just over a week and was wondering, besides Carlsbad Caverns and the Alien Museum, what else is there to do there? We have three kids ages 14,13,and 9. We just want to relax and enjoy some sight seeing mainly.

You will be close to White Sands National Monument and there is a nice space museum in Alamagordo nearby.

Caplin volcano is a great way to spend a few hours. Drive right to the top and overlook the surrounding area. Also in the Northeastern corner of the state is Clayton Lake State park. Many dinosaur foot prints are clearly visable in the spillway area and you can walk in their foot steps (if you're interested in that sort of thing). The campground there is not bad either but as I recall it's water and electric with a dump station so if you need to park next to a nuclear power station it's not for you ![[emoticon]](http://www.rv.net/sharedcontent/cfb/images/smile.gif "smile")

West of Roswell is Ruidosa which is in a very pretty area, there is a major Indian casino up there, Alamagordo was mentioned, Cloudcroft is pretty. I wouldn't plan on staying in Roswell. Nothing there except the ET Museum and related tourist shops. Check at Carlsbad Caverns and see if the bats are in residence. They have a terrific sunset show where you sit by an opening into the caverns where hundreds of thousands of bats come out and fly to places to eat. Awesome!!

Thanks for all the ideas so far guys, keep them coming. We've been to Capulin volcano twice in the last couple of years, love it there. We stay at Black Mesa state park in Kenton, Ok alot and it's only an hour drive or so to Capulin. Our picture in our profile was taken at Black Mesa.

Bottomless Lakes State Park is near Roswell to the east. I have not been to it. Nor have I been to Oasis State Park southwest of Clovis near Portales; the park is 6.5 miles north of Portales via N.M. 467.
Brantley Lake State Park is 12 miles north of Carlsbad via U.S. 285, then 4.5 miles northeast on Eddy County Road 30. Have not stayed there as well.
I believe I would rather spend some relaxing days at Valley of Fires BLM Campground by Carrizozo. As well as near White Oaks :::::: Clicky :::: Ditto ::: More Stuff
West of Roswell on the way toward Ruidoso (The Billy the Kid Trail), a neat route to see some neat country would be to take US 380 off US 70 at Hondo, follow it to Carrizozo, you will be passing Billy the Kid Country & Lincoln (off the route some but connected to the Lincoln County War Fort Stanton) & Smokey Bear in Capitan, & the neat Valley of Fire BLM Campground. and then use US 54 to Alamogordo. Or keep on US 380 to San Antonio to the Bosque del Apache which might still be neat with birds this time of the year (?) and I-25. Bosque

Assuming you have around a week for spring break with the kids. I would stay some of the time at or near Alamogordo. Go to White Sands and the Space Museum. For White Sands you sometimes can get some plastic sleds at the local stores to ride down the sand dunes.
And then you can drive up for the day to Cloudcroft or Ruidoso depending on your preference. This time of year the mountains can still get good snowstorms and there are ski slopes nearby if you want to go skiing. Ski Apache by Ruidoso is the larger one. I haven't been to Cloudcroft for a long time and I think their ski slope was closed for awhile.
It is about an hour drive to Ruidoso or Cloudcroft and then another hour to get to ski Apache from Ruidoso.
I also don't know what the ski conditions there are like. Except for a few storms it has been warm and dry here.
From there I would stay at Carlsbad to go to the Caverns. They will be fun for kids. But, I think it is too early in the season to see the bats. If you are going from Alamogordo to Carlsbad. You might want to get some input on whether to avoid going through Cloudcroft. It is a pretty steep climb from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft, but I haven't done it with an RV. I would probably go that way, but I am used to driving the RV in the mountains in New Mexico.
I would just stop at Roswell on the way home.

I dearly LOVE Ruidoso. So much to do, so much to see, so many sights and sounds, and the majestic of Cloudcroft and its quaint shopping. Walk the sidewalks in Ruidoso, enjoy life.
Roswell? Just a wide spot in the road.

We are committed to stay at Roswell with reservations at a park there. We chose it because it looks like a good central spot on the map for Carlsbad Caverns and the mountains. It does put Whitesands at a three and a half hour drive but Carlsbad Caverns is 60 miles, Ruidoso is 65 miles and Capitan is 65 miles. We have 5 days there. 1 day at each place 1 day to see the Alien Museum and a day to goof off. Just wondering what to do on the day to goof off?

We loved New Mexico and did Carlsbad Caverns. Just awesome. We stayed at the Carlsbad KOA. It was relatively new and when we pulled in, I told my husband we're not leaving. Outdoor heated pool, hot tub, full hookup with 50amp, cable and wifi. Nice level lots. If I ever go back that's where I will park. Have a great trip.
