Another White Rim Trip
Part2
On To the White Rim Trail
Before starting on this trip report, I want to give my personal thanks to Bob, Nance, Ben and DJ for joining me on this adventure but also the photos and videos they took and gave me to use, you guys are great!
There are a lot of video links in part2.
June 22, 2011
DJ had rolled in to Cowboy Campground yesterday, securing site#1, the last site open, we had site#2.
The morning sun charged into the cloudless blue sky as we stirred from a deep slumber in our mobile caves. Getting ready for today’s adventure we would all meet at the trailhead at 08:00 hrs.

Meeting up at the trailhead and making pre-launch adjustment to our rigs before descending into the bowls of Island in the Sky.

Three little trucks all in a row just waiting to go a turn here and a turn there down they go to the bottom below.

At Shafer Switch Backs, I stayed above to video all three trucks making their way down. Stopping at certain point, I had to catch up with the group while they waited for me and as I was running down to them I though what a good idea it would be to shoot some footage from atop my camper. You what they say about what looks good on paper?

DJ said my new moniker should be spidyman, watch the video and see why.

Shafer Switch Backs were still being worked on, dump trucks coming and going along with a flagman down on the trail. Arriving where Shafer Trail turns towards Potash Rd and White Rim Trail begins.

![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-hjhskb6/0/M/SDC12156-M.jpg)
I had to do a little adjustment to my rig tire pressure; I wanted them at 40 psi. Bob, Nance, Ben and DJ took a few photos while we checked over our rigs, the bugs at this point made themselves be known, but would disappear at the slightest breeze. Firing up our trucks, I’m in the lead with DJ next and the Strucks guarding the back door, we all headed for Gooseneck Overlook.
![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-vb7q2Gq/0/M/WRT2011B-041-M.jpg)
South of us, one could see the La Sal Mountains still with caps of snow on their peaks.
![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-mqZZbDK/0/M/WRT2011B-043-M.jpg)
Many photo stops were done before arriving at Gooseneck Overlook, once there people walked quickly out to see the Colorado River.

Back to our waiting truck, what choice does they we got their keys and to our next stop Mussleman Arch. The trail road wasn’t that far to Mussleman Arch, but in many places, it was slow due to the large cobble stone rocks we had rolled over.

Vegetation along the rim trail made itself known for any place that roots could be sent down they grew.

A short easy climb lay before us, from the summit, Airport Tower can be seen in the distance and that will be our lunch stop.

Not long after cresting the summit, we spotted someone else besides us down here. Flagging down the upcoming vehicle, I asked the driver if there were anyone else on the trail, no one was seen he said that he knew of.
![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-MsQQV5F/0/M/WRT2011B-084-M.jpg)
The Strucks family was especially has fun with this trip as the fallowing video shows.

Reaching Airport Campground couldn’t have come any sooner, my belly was growling.

![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-vZfcN3Z/0/M/SDC12202-M.jpg)
After a pleasant lunch, once again all of us hit the trail. One of formation that is more unusual is a mushroom like structure that is right along the trail.
![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-xv68Trk/0/M/Magic-Mushroom-O.gif)
![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-PXjfJg8/0/M/SDC12230-M.jpg)
After a bit of fun at the magic mushroom our trucks were fired back up and we made our way to the next that I knew that DJ and Bob would find a bit on the fun side, that area that I call the “Big Tilt “and Washer Woman Arch can be seen from there.

That part of WRT looks scarier than it is. We are closing in on Gooseberry Campground, following the road would bring us over a ledge, which you don’t know about until you have gone around the curve.

![[image]](http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/White-Rim-Trail-2011part2/i-Dk9Pmv4/0/S/Along-The-Trail-20001-S.jpg)
Arriving at Gooseberry Campground, we all picked our spots and settled in. Howard made for the nearby ledge as the sun was setting lower in the sky.

Dinner was eaten while watching the distance buffs change colors, DJ was kicking back in his enjoying evening beer. It was soon nightfall and a veil of silence draped itself over the land.

Looks like a lot of fun. In the photo of the six people, who's the funny looking one?

That's hard to tell, they all have a "funny" bone.

Some great video of the TCs going down Shafer Trail. Did it back in 2000 in my F350 Crew Cab, not sure if I could do it a second time.
Think Julie was trying to throw Alex over the edge for making her drive down some. Did you make sure she hadn't taken out an extra life insurance policy on you.
Look forward to the next installment. And don't worry, think it'll be awhile before any of us get tired of White Rim Trail reports.

I dunno Alex, I'll have to name you Loco Man for riding the top of your tc. You must have been high on TCT or something. (Truck Camper Top) Maybe those suction shoes would work next time. Great great videos, you got it down. And I think they named Muscleman Arch after DJ. Who needs a winch with guns like that?! It looks like a real fun trip for all, glad you had good company Alex, kudos to you all!
