Topic: Generator grounding, humourous....

Posted By: bigfootford on 02/04/12 12:05pm

For those that need a generator earth ground, you could put the bucket in the bed of your truck...

The work instructions said the generator had to have an earth ground, but the catwalk was 3 stories up in the air. Soooo they got a bucket....

I'm not sure OSHA would approve of this

How about with a bigger bucket? [emoticon]

Maybe, if you put more earth in the bucket, and tied the bucket to the handrail.

I was considering one of those, but I would probably mount the bucket on my ladder.

Now THAT'S a hoot. Even used the prescribed 3' spike driven (or leaned against at least) the ground. [emoticon]

Funny thing is, after looking at it, this setup almost works. The ground rod is pretty close to, or is touching the guard rail which I would expect to be grounded. Paint might prevent a solid connection though.

That is hilarious.

It looks like the building itself has lots of steel structure going to ground. Just clamp it to the railing after confirming a path to ground level.

Besides, it's the thought that counts.

Inspector said that "It has to be connected to a driven ground rod".
I remember an inspector told a home owner that he had to ground the water and drain lines to the electrical service. It was all plastic piping.

Thanks Jim,

Those folks probably think OSHA is a small town in Wisconsin. I'm suprised they didn't put a steering wheel on it as ground rods should be driven!

Rick.....There is no such thing as "foolproof", because ..there will always be a bigger fool being made.

That building looks like it likely has some exposed beams somewhere nearby. I would have picked one of those to ground to.

Sorry that won't meet code. The rod needs to be 8' long and copper coated.
I am going to show this pic to my local building inspector. That should get him going!

So how about if we fill your Silverado bed with dirt and lay an 8' rod in there? Earth is earth.. Does code specify it has to be attached to the planet? [emoticon]

You make a good point here.

You could stand in the bucket whilst working. Maybe two earth colled buckets with the ground wire connecting them.

He's right! To do the job properly, you need an 8 foot rod, neatly coiled to fit the bucket. The inspector still may insist on a metal bucket.

My truck campers ground rod terminates in a flower pot... and Janet has flowers as we travel.

PVSolar electric really makes the flowers colors flash in a brilliant way... lights up Janet too if her hands are wet and she tries to pick a bouquet.... makes her hot all over.

She thinks it's me!

Well, they screwed it up, the rod is supposed to be copper. Darn part time help.

So how does everybody ground their portable generators when camping? I've had three, and they all required grounding according to the owners manuals. Just curious.

What does the Owners Manuals say is proper grounding?

I use the Redneck requirements for grounding. If I do not get shocked when running the generator, that is because it is properly grounded. If I were to get shocked, I would probably use the method from the OP. [emoticon]

P.S. I bet some engineers are frothing at the mouth on this subject. [emoticon]

When power plants were deregulated and bought by outside groups they had to hire help off the street.........

This photo is funny BUT is exactly why I quit one early morning after fighting with management over safety issues.

I'd laugh but this hit real close to home..........scary stuff!
