You already got a TON of good suggestions, so I'll just add a few extra. We LOVED NM and here are our favorite spots in the SW:

-> Gila Cliff Dwellings - you already have them on the list and they're definitely worth it. Take time to do some of the surrounding trails too. Read more HERE

-> Pinos Altos - A cute, litte not-to-be-missed town near Silver City. Go check out the monday night open-mike night in the old theatre. Read more HERE

-> City of Rocks - it's a state park and a cool place to visit. LOVE that place. Read more HERE

-> White Sands NM - if you manage to go a little further east, this is definitely worth the visit! We stayed at Oliver Lee State Park and went for a day-trip. They also offer sunset strolls. Read more HERE

Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus is a nice stop for a day or two. we stopped there in Jan. We were given a goodie bag at registration which included coupon drink special at Pink Store across the border. Food is tasty and very nice people. This was the 3rd time we have stopped over the years.
