So, I have manual locking front hubs on my 2000 F350. I can use the low range without engaging the front differential with no problem? Would this be done simply for improved turning?

That is an epic looking lake, but the roads remind me of a few I wound up on in south eastern Oregon down near Plush.
Given how washed out some of the ruts were on that road, you'd have to have a D20 CAT running ahead of me regrading the bad sections to get me up the road in one piece .

I was gonna look this spot up on a map, but after seeing the pics I didn't bother! And no you can't ever borrow my truck don't bother asking!
Great pics and great adventure...when we meet up, can we pick an easier place to get to?

The first thing I did with my new camper was to remove the jacks.
I can't imagine the damage/cost to repair a good hit on those exposed anchors.
I love Idaho....great trip and thanks for sharing.

I'm surprised that there was no frame twist with those wheels off the ground, the cab/bed remained aligned. Thanks for sharing.

Sure was a ticklish road to travel. I need to practice more on driving my dually with six wheels on the ground before I graduate to balancing on five. Was sure glad to see that all ended well and you made it to the lake. Too bad the wind messed up the mirror effect. Gives you a reason to try it again some day ... or maybe not!

You did all those with bigger hardside truck campers proud, insp1505! What a great trip, location superb and always well done photos. After reading your narrative, I suspect there might have been good planning the girlfriend didn't go on this trip.
Have fun and carry lots of clean underwear.

If you were on a hard surface and tried to use low range (which also engages 4x4) without disengaging your front hubs, because trucks don't have a centre differential it winds up the transmission system and can cause damage. The improved turning is just a symptom of the truck not having to fight the transmission wind-up that is trying to prevent the front wheels from turning at the different speed needed when steering.
Knew someone who didn't understand 4x4 systems (or at least the difference between part time 4x4 and fulltime like a Range Rover) - whenever it rained he would engage 4x4 to drive on the highway. He learned the hard way when the bill arrived for replacing various parts of his transmission.
