Topic: EZ PASS for out of state visitor?

Posted By: GordonThree on 04/11/15 08:03pm

I'll be taking a trip to the DC area this week to visit family... and pretty much every direct route between here and there is an EZ PASS toll road.

Last time I was in DC, many of the toll roads didn't accept any form cash / card payment, just the EZ PASS.

I surfed around Google for quite a while but I didn't see any clear indications of how to get a pass for temporary use, as it has to be linked to your license plate or some such.

Sure I can program my navigator to "avoid" toll roads, but I'd rather keep it simple and just pay.

Any suggestions?

I believe that you can buy a transponder at any toll booth office... That's just a guess

Go to this web page for EZ Pass

In our travels, EZ Pass works most of the time. Last time it didn't work was for the Florida turnpike.

I don't have E-Z Pass, I stay off the toll roads whenever possible.

Did you check the website for E-Z Pass.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Website tells you where you can purchase a Go Pak.

Hope this helps.
Enjoy your trip.

Went thrrough a toll plaza in Ca that had no provisions for paying and recieved a bill in the mail with a pic of our car. Maybe they do this back there also ?

I went through a toll booth that was closed in New York a few years back. No way to pay, no attendant, nothing. A few weeks later I get a ticket in the mail for not paying the toll plus the cost of the toll. I called them and said I would be happy to pay the toll, but I didn't live in New York and they could forget the ticket. They agreed. I wonder how many people just pay it and they get all of that extra $$.

I've been using EZ Pass for a long time and love it. However, about a year ago, I had to replace a couple of my tags. Evidently, while my tags were being transported around the New York city area, my sensors were read at a couple of toll gates. I noticed the charges on my EZ Pass statement and promptly called. They immediately took care of the problem. But if using EZ Pass, you do need to monitor your monthly statement. Using EZ pass can reduce or eliminate waiting in lines to pay tolls when you use the EZ Pass only toll booths.

When we planned out trip from Texas to Connecticut via Florida - toll roads were a concern. So I went on-line and got a Sunpass for Florida, and an EZ-Pass for the northeast.

Simple and easy. Though I do try to avoid toll roads when possible. Sometimes it is not - especially with bridges.

As mentioned above - always monitor any toll pass account - and watch for spurious charges. I've found toll agencies are always very easy to deal with about unwarranted charges.

I would suggest you open an I-Pass account in Illinois. This can be done over the internet and they will send the transponder to you. It's good anywhere EZ-Pass is accepted. The advantage of the I-Pass over other state's EZ-Pass accounts is there is no monthly maintenance fee like most of the other states charge. We purchased an EZ-Pass in MD a few years ago and it didn't take long for the maintenance fees to eat up our balance when we were traveling in other parts of the country. We purchased an I-Pass last year and is still has the balance left it in when we left the area, waiting on us to travel to another EZ-Pass state for use.

You can stop at most any C V S store,in Ind,or Ill, and buy a transponder......and set up an account with A Credit card.

I haul RVs out of Elkhart/Goshen area...all over,and my transponder works in Pa,Virgina,D.C.,New York,Ill, Ind........etc..
Very easy to do.[emoticon]

I always laugh when I hear that. We have the technology to take a pic of your vehicle, figure out where you live, but then send a paper bill in the US mail. Seems like they oughta be able to find your email address.

Doesn't work too well for those of us on the road.

I got the iPass from Illinois when we went to the northeast and it worked great. It works on EZPass roads. They mailed me the transponders and I loaded money online. I got an email when the amount was low and I added more money. Well worth it. http://www.illinoistollway.com/tolls-and-i-pass/about-i-pass;jsessionid=CA5FD2576D516A38180C1F40D25A428F

iPass here as well. Can change plates and add money to your account online. Never a hiccup even when pulling trailer.

I second accsys suggestion. Google I-pass and get it, it is only good in the northeast, if you travel to Fla you will need a sunpass

What passes do I need going from Michigan to and in Louisiana?

That would be because at this time, Florida is not part of the EZ Pass consortium. Florida's Sun Pass works in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Compatibility with EZ Pass is in the works.

Yeah...I should have done my homework re the Sun Pass, but I hadn't anticipated being on the FL turnpike. It would be nice if EZ Pass would work with the Florida turnpike.

I believe you don't need any. It should be fairly easily possible to find decent routes without tolls, and the toll roads you're at all likely to encounter accept cash. (The only exception I can think of are some roads in and around Chicago should you, for some bizarre hedonistic reason, think it fun to unnecessarily drive through that area. They do have some exits and entrances that are not set up for cash payments. I don't remember the exact roads I saw that on.)

EZPass covers Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Illinois calls their version I-Pass, but it's still part of the same system.

Also, EZ-Pass, though good through much of the East Coast, is STATE dependent in terms of fees, etc. I live in NJ, and have to pay a monthly fee. I tried going over the DMB to Delaware to sign up for the DE version of EZ-Pass, and I could not, since I live in NJ. Odd. Things may have changed since then, but overall, EZ-Pass is state-centric for many things.

We also have the IPASS from IL. We do not use it often but it sure saves us from waiting in line and carrying around a bucket of change. The IPASS has no service fee and it can be transferred from vehicle to vehicle. We will use it on a rental car next month when we visit family in MA. We will just go online to our account and add the rental car. We are towing a 5th wheel and only need one transponder. Has worked in every state where we have encountered EZPASS tolls. We applied for ours by mail because we could not find one anywhere in Central IL or IN. We are fulltimers and residents of SD.

We also gave a SunPass. We have family in the Orladio area and just spent a week there. The SunPass was very handy. There are alternative routes to the toll roads but the roads are so congested, we now just pay the tolls.

As Canadians, we were able to buy our EZ-Pass online through the New York Thruway system. There are no maintenance fees for EZ-Pass in New York State; we just have to keep a small balance in our account which they take automatically (when it's needed) from our US Dollar MasterCard. It's so great not having to fumble around for coins, and they don't take too kindly to our "different" Canadian coins if we run out of US ones.[emoticon]

At least in Illinois, the IPass rate us half the cash rate. Quickly pays for the $10 transponder cost.

We have a De EZ Pass as most anything related to Gov in MD sucks. They happily take our money from out of state and have some of the best customer service I've encountered.

That is humorous, as I live in Connecticut but New Jersey was perfectly happy to take my money for an EZPass! We travel up and down I95 in New England which is why I bought the pass - actually thinking of buying another one.

I am surprised that all the EZPass-type systems are not compatible. After all these years I assumed they would be.

Connecticut keeps talking about some sort of Pass system, most likely EZPass. I am surprised it is taking this long to implement it - not very often politicians delay in taking your money!

I may remember incorrectly, but I thought Federal legislation is requiring all the toll system passes, EZ Pass & Sun Pass for instance, must be made to talk to and be compatible with each other. And I'm thinking the year is 2016 for the conversion to be complete.
