We had an excellent adventure over the 4th of July weekend as we set off to explore a new campground out of necessity as Rocky Mountain National Park was completely booked for the holiday weekend (when they say book in advance they aren't kidding)! Anyway, we discovered an open space camping area just southeast of Estes Park on Highway 36 called Hermit Park! When we stopped to check it out a couple days before we couldn't get in because it was sold out, but thankfully there was a last minute cancellation and we got into the one and only spot available Thur and Friday night! As it turned out we hit a goldmine. I'm really surprised I haven't heard more folks talk about it as it was very quiet and beautiful. Honestly, I liked it better than being in RMNP as it was so quiet! The roar of constant traffic on 36 couldn't be heard thanks to being tucked back into the wilderness some 2+ miles at our camp site.

While it is true the campground has reservations and you have to pay for camping despite the fact there are no hookups, it is well patrolled by rangers and the roads are well maintained. Additionally, there are vault toilets that are very clean if required and fire rings at each site. There are also campgrounds for camping with your horses and generators are allowed in all but one campground. Another nice bonus is access to Kruger Trail from within the campground. This is a beautiful hike to scenic overlooks of RMNP and the town of Estes Park.

Lastly, I just can't say enough for the beauty of the area and its extreme close proximity to Estes Park. We could be in Estes within 10-15 mins from our campsite. Highly recommend this place for those looking for something close to Estes and RMNP!

I really liked what you wrote about Hermit Park. It's nice to know of other campgrounds in the area other than Rocky Mountain National Park. Excellent photos you took of your adventures at this park. Well done.

Thanks for the compliments…it was a great time. I wanted to share as I know this is a popular location and Hermit Park isn't very well known and it certainly offers an excellent alternative to RMNP or the other options in the area.

Our first visit to Estes Park was over this 4th of July weekend as well, but we stayed in a condo rather than our preferred TC, which we don't have along on this trip.

Estes Park is a nice place, but the traffic over the 4th was horrible.

I'll never forget the year we spent the 4th at Woodland Park. Sat by the lake, nearly froze to death along with our 4 kids , and the sound of the explosions was a unique experience to say the least. Beautiful memory.

We ventured into town as well on the 3rd and it was a mad house! That said, Hermit Park was extremely quiet and relaxing...hard to believe that all that traffic and congestion was only a few short miles away!
