Thanks for the tip. I'll get Penski, Gibbs, and Hendrick to call Germany, and order 40 brass and 40 titanium nuts apiece. They can afford to experiment a bit (they get a tax break).

Let me preface my question with the fact I don't watch much car racing in general, but I do stop for a few minutes when channel surfing if a race is on.
I ask out of ignorance. Don't F1 cars use a single central nut on their wheels? Why don't they have similar issues with wheels coming off? Are there design differences between the wheels (other than the obvious size/width) that make F1 wheels easier to install/secure?

The heat build-up is significantly much higher in NASCAR racecars vs F-1. PLUS, it's much easier to get rid of the heat in F-1 brakes, and wheels.

So the wheel nuts heat up and expand at a greater rate than the spindles so they loosen up? I wasn't sure if it was an issue with the wheels not seating fully before the wheel nut is tightened or a failure of the nut/spindle or something else.

Brad keslowski to home a wheel and nut because he felt they had a safety issue and modified it. He got excessive fine. I wonder what they did.

Be aware that what I do is look at the brake energy, vector analysis, thermal dynamics, my years of experience with steel, aluminum, and magnesium wheels (with "knock-off wing or hex single nuts}. THEN, I take a WAG as to what might solve THEIR problem. I believe it's a metal GALLING problem. If you look at all the elements of the problem, what they have is a "perfect storm" for metal galling,.....especially if they overtighten the nut when everything is unevenly hot. AND, if they're using left-hand threads on half of the hubs,...who knows if the impact air gun is set on the proper mode? For all we know they might first erroneously tighten a hot-hot system ,...and THEN attempt to loosen the nut???? I wish I was Penske. I would buy me spanking new $$$90K Ranger bass boat and go fishing. Years, ago when I bought mine, it came with stainless steel engine mounting bolts WITH brass self-lock nuts.

Why not just go back to what has worked since the start of NASCAR, 5 lug nuts?

Because NASCAR will never admit that they blew it. My question is how did this not come up in testing?
Nascar has never liked Kes because he calls them on the BS.

NASCAR has made more millionaires out of drivers than any other USA racing organization. IMO smart drivers are careful to measure their words whenever they say anything critical about NASCAR. I'm sure NASCAR will find the solution to the nut problem. (I get to watch for free....)
