Last year when I was preparing to grease my front wheel bearings I came across this procedure: Heavy Duty Bearing Adjust or Tapered Roller Bearing Adjustment Procedure RP 618A
It made the tightening procedure simple and almost foolproof...

That's the gospel for tightening the retainer nut. The "mechanic" that worked on my MH knows about it now. I sent him a copy and the link to a video on the topic. Too late for me, but maybe he won't screw up someone else's machine.
