Basically a two-lane road. Vast open high desert landscape which is likely to be hot, then Rabbit Ears pass, then Berthoud pass. Steamboat Springs and Winter Park are the tourist towns. I prefer to drive that kind of road during the daylight hours, it's safer. If you do drive it at night, be very careful for wildlife out on the road, particularly around dusk.

Yes drive it when the Sun is Out - will be Warm - from the green river or/ Vernal to SteamBoat is easy with a few reservoirs and a couple State Parks - Might think about taking RT 9 south out of Kremmling to Silverthorne - unless you are into Great Mountain Passes - Berthoud - this will get you on a leisurely drive along the River to The Lake and I-70 - Map to Silverthorne - BUT If you Love passes Berthoud is a great drive and when you get to the top you will be able to cool off [emoticon]

Couple other notes - State Parks along the Route - Yampa - Steamboat Lake - StageCoach - all are enjoyable as is Grand Lake the town.

Hope this Helps,

We love Grand Lake and the Going to the Sun highway access into RMNP.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Colorado is tall and some of it is steep. Even the Interstates are challenging. There are no easy roads west of Denver. Drive in daylight, take frequent breaks, watch your speed. You will be fine.

I liked living there but some of the roads are terrifying in a snow storm.

Do you like it better than Trail Ridge Road in Glacier? Or the Tioga Pass in Great Smokey Mountains?

With very rare exceptions, we never drive at night. Our 6 and 9 year old grandchildren always travel with us, so we plan stops at RV parks with pools and stop early enough to let them burn off energy swimming.

My route guidance has me taking Rt9 as you suggested.

Thanks everyone!

Make sure there are no bike races. The roads were narrow and we lost two hours but it was a long time ago.
