VW Touareg with a 4.0L V8 diesel engine producing 416hp/664lb-ft with the ability to tow a little over 7,700 lbs. I wish Ford, GM, or Ram slapped this engine in their half tons instead of a small 3.0L diesel with dismal horsepower numbers. I would be more tempted to buy a half ton diesel with these kind of power ratings than what is currently available.

Although, these power numbers would probably be lower in the US since our diesel NOx emissions requirements are stricter than the EU's. VW would have to decrease output to meet US emissions similar to how VM Motori has to decrease power output of the US Ecodiesel versus that of EU markets.

I had three VW Beetles in the 1960's. They were reliable, durable little cars with that air cooled, Boxer 4 banger.

I've kept away from VW since the '80's...expensive parts, etc. Nope. I wouldn't be interested in the new V-Dubs and at one time in the air cooled days I was a rabid fan.

What happened ?

Yep, you don’t want to own one of today’s European cars! $$$$$$$ upkeep! Not to mention trying to maintain a Euro diesel!

I guess I am the exception of this rule as an ex-owner of a BMW 335d(tuned and deleted inline 6 3.0L) that I put over 150k miles on before I sold it and a current owner of a 328d(also tuned and deleted inline 4 2.0L) that currently has over 60K.

The 335d never gave me engine trouble and never touched it besides maintenance. The only issues I had with the 335d were was with a few optional bells and whistles stuff that I could live without. So far, not issues with the 328d.

As far as maintenance, the oil is between $9-11 per quart depending if it is special and the filter for both is about $10. The 335d takes 8 quartz and the 328d takes 6 both at 10k mile intervals. The fuel filter is $45 that needs to be changes every fourth oil change. So far, that is is all I had to do with either diesel.

I had a 2004 Jetta TDI. Great little car.

Have a 2013 Audi now. Zero problems since new, just a few recalls concerning things that didn't affect drivability or take more than an hour to do.

The car has an electric cooling pump for the turbo to cool it down after you shut the car off. It had to be deactivated for two months until they could get new pumps so they extended the turbo warranty four years from the time they deactivated the pump. That's on a car that was already out of warranty for two years. I'll buy another.
