We have a Xantrex Freedom 458 inverter charger in our 5ver. A number of years ago one of the girls had an expensive brand new hair straightener that she plugged in while running off inverter power. The straightener failed to work .... it was the first time using it so we were able to get a refund. In the back of my mind I've always wondered whether the inverter could have fried it? Are there things that shouldn't be plugged into a modified sine wave inverter?

A mattress heater with digital controls comes to mind. Some people report 'no problems' with msw, but some do. For my money it's just better to go right to psw. No worries, everything works.

Spending the extra $ for a PSW inverter over a MSW is insurance money well spent.

What I'm wondering is does plugging in to MSW fry things? Or do some things just refuse to work on msw? Specifically do I risk damaging a lap top or cordless tool battery packs?

It depends on the internal circuitry of the device, especially it's own power supply. Laptops and the chargers you mentioned are generally happy with MSW. Some TV's may not like it. Micro's are a big no.

MSW applied directly to AC motors is espeically hard on them.

While MSW is more efficient than PSW, I think it's worth it to use a PSW for general use just to be safe.

Yes with MSW some will fry, some will refuse to work, some will not work properly, and of course many things work just fine.
I found battery chargers and bricks tend to run hotter on MSW even if they worked.

With SW all things work as designed.
