I have just noticed as I plan for a trip that the COE parks (and some others) are having a later check-in time: many at 4:00 pm and one, at least, with 6:00 pm. These are all in Arkansas, but I think it applies more broadly than that.

That certainly does not fit my usual pattern of moving around noon. Have you noticed this, and what can we do about it? I know that what suits some may not suit others, so I know this is a personal opinion.

Yep. West Coast it's now 3pm, just like a hotel.

That could be a guaranteed check-in time. Over many, many years camping almost exclusively in NPS parks, forests, and state parks, if the site is open when we arrive, we can usually occupy it. Occasionally, we'd have to wait, and then we'd just park in the lot and hike or sightsee until we could occupy it.

Some private campgrounds are more picky, then again, some are more accommodating - at least the few times we've stayed in one.

Are the check-out times later too?

I wonder if there are COVID requirements where the parks are required to sanitize picnic tables etc. in-between guests?

So move at noon, go out to lunch, drive slower, stop and enjoy an activity on the way, arrive at 4:30.
Enjoy the journey. Life is more than a destination.

And yes I have noticed the same.

Unfortunate for those of us that like to get the TT setup and then drive around the area a little before returning to have a libation and start dinner.

We booked a spot at Rend Lake this past summer in Southern IL. Arrived at Noon on SUNDAY -- thinking the weekenders would be gone by then. Check out time was 4pm....and I'll be dipped the majority of the park stayed until literally 4pm. We sat in the parking lot for about 4 hours waiting. Yes, we walked around, read a book, had lunch...but like others have said -- we hoped to set up camp and relax...not tailgate in the parking lot for the boat ramp.

What was amazing, i'll say it again, is that about 2/3 of the park left at 4pm....was a traffic jam for about 30 mins in the park to get out.

Never seen that before...but then, 2020 has not been "normal".

This trend started way before covid....just like a hotel, check out at noon, check in at 4:00. The CG needs time for maintenance during peak season, whether it's mowing or repairs. Also just like a hotel, if you are arrive at 2:00 and the site is clean and ready to occupy, most will certainly let you set up on it.

Easy fix: Let the RV parks know in advance that you won't be booking a stay due to the late check-in policy. You gotta let them know of your dissatisfaction or nothing will change.
