I think most of it is to discourage people traveling. It obviously increases the spread if people move around, a lot even within countries

What about those of us that like to go north to visit Canada or take our time going to Alaska?

The reason we can fly south from Canada is that air Canada is subsidized by our government and we private snowbirds are not! I haven't seen any data showing us grown-up responsible adult retirees as a clear and present danger spreading covid and I would have no problem showing proof at the US border that Frau Blücher and I are free of that infection and plan a direct route to our property and self-isolating for two weeks upon arrival. As I see it we long-term visitors aren't the problem it's the short-term border crossers that would be along with the other morons not wearing masks or sanitizing or packing into night clubs shoulder to shoulder or gathering in large groups to protest yadda, yadda,,,,It's gonna' be a long cold winter!

The closing of crossing into the usa does nothing for the health of Canadians. Opening the border for day crossings or even for a few weeks is not going to happen. But allowing snowbirds to go for a month or more should be doable. Allowing travelers to cross the usa in order to get to Mexico is also doable.

Right now the border is closed to that kind of travel. If you are referring to next summer I would think the chances are good that it will be open.

Guess and Hope. No one is planning that far out yet. My guessing and hoping involves a vaccine, maybe better treatments, hopefully a drop in the mortality rate in the USA. Who knows.

Currently with document, you can cross through Canada to and from Alaska by the most direct route. You must enter at certain points of entre. You must stay on that route and meet time requirements. Very hard to do in an RV!

That's my understanding, too - it you dawdle or wander off the most direct route - it will be the most expensive trip you ever took :-(
