Hello again,

I found a dually in my budget that has 120k miles. The engine and transmission are in very good condition.

The problem is that the original owner had a hitch for a fifth wheel anf he did not care of the box, because of that you have four 6 inches of perforated holes.

My question to you is: does this affect the strength of the bed for carrying around a 4000 lbs truck camper?

Thanks for your time,

Intravino

NO....
Might affect hauling gravel, dirt, mulch but not a TC

TC Weight is carried by frame/suspension/axle/tires

6" holes???
Might look into finding plugs for those hole, have some sheet metal welded over them or a salvage bed

Is it time for your medication or mine?

4 x 6” holes? That’s pretty crazy. If you mean small holes in 4-6 inches, I think that’s fine. Most people use a rubber mat. I’d add one of those and not worry about it once you make sure the holes are protected for rust?

I don't recall how big they were, but the holes in the Dodge factory hitch seemed pretty big with the black covers off. Dealer can sell you new covers, they twist into the holes.
I see your title says 2000, and I don't think the factory hitch offering was until 2003.

dont think any of the companies had factory undermount hitches in 2000.

Our 2006 Dodge dually Laramine still has the holes when we had our fifth wheel before getting our TC. We haven't had any problems carrying our TC.

I just removed plywood who was attached as a shim under my heavy camper.
The imprint generated over the years shows that most of the camper load goes on 6" stripe right behind the cabin and then on 6" stripe at the end of the bed.
Meaning you could remove the bed floor between those stripes and it would not affect camper carrying.

If you found a low mile, good condition 20 year old Cummins dually in Quebec, buy it.
95% chance whatever holes you’re trying to describe won’t matter.
100% chance it will be better than 95% of the rest of the old trucks you’ll find up there.
Don’t worry about it.
