In 1980 while flying UN search and rescue missions in south China Sea for Vietnamese refugee boat people as a volunteer civilian helicopter pilot I experienced partial interment failure of my one and only ADF homing device to find my way back to the Cap Anamur mother ship over 50 miles away in low clouds, rain and limited forward visibility with low fuel state. My pucker factor was was way over the red line.
I continued on flying the standard royal navy type search pattern and with good luck flew out into clearer weather conditions and spotted the ship as tiny speck in far distance. The Bell 206B jet ranger I was flying had only one generator, engine and battery so every flight was a long shot.

On another occasion I was too close to the Vietnam coast at the Mekong River delta and accidentally flew over a Vietnamese Navy Gunboat again in poor flying weather with low clouds and poor visibility. They warned me away in very strong English language. Saved over a 1000 refugees who were resettled in Germany. Website is here:

Two flying stories:
- My cabin "in the woods" is on a ridge, overlooking a river valley, requiring two turns (in the air) to get out of the valley and into wider open areas. On clear days, I've established river bar landing sites ("If I get into fog HERE, I'll drop down and land THERE) since I may be in the middle of those turns when fog rolls in. Had to land on the riverbar one day....amazing how much shorter a 400' landing spot feels when you MUST land there rather than practice landings on a nice clear day. This experience was a pretty tense 20 minutes or so.
- Flying with the wife one very nice day looking at mountain scenery. She drops her pen (being used to make notes): "Can I get my pen?" "Sure, unbuckle and grab it, the air's very calm" Shortly thereafter (if anyone flys a Piper ragwing, you'll understand the control layout): 1) her behind is forcing the stick far to the right and slightly nose-down; 2) her foot jams the left rudder pedal pretty hard in; and 3) her elbow jams the throttle all the way forward. We're now in a fully cross-controlled, full-power, flight towards the nearest mountain. I calmly said "Dear, why don't you sit back down for a minute." Or possibly, I loudly said "sit back down and get off the blank controls before we crash." ![[emoticon]](http://www.rv.net/sharedcontent/cfb/images/smile.gif "smile") This experience was in all reality probably 45 seconds or less but that 45 seconds scared the snot out of me since I was momentarily not the airplane driver, just along for the ride.
