Can you temporarily use the Superglide slider hitch to tow a 5er without the capture plate installed on the pin box? Would only be needed to tow a 5er about 50 miles.

No. It's very dangerous. You would be best to borrow a capture plate and use it for the short pull -- they are easily removed and re-attached.

Unless they have changed the design in the last 10 years I don't think it would be a problem. Without a capture plate it will not slide back so you would have to be very careful if backing at a sharp angle.
On the newer models the plate is very easy to remove and replace so if one is handy just use it, if not just be careful backing.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I know the slide feature would not work without the capture plate but we don't need that. Our son in law has a Superglide and of course a capture plate, but from what I recall, there are different ones for different pin boxes so I don't know if his would fit.
Reason I'm even asking is because we're gonna buy a 5er soon but I probably won't have my hitch installed by then. My son in law pulls a 40 ft 5er with his CTD Dually and could tow our new purchase to our house. He has a capture plate but I don't know if it would fit our future purchase.

NO! Don't try this unless you can block the slide from moving. When you make a turn the 5th wheel will turn and slide but not the way you want.
You are asking for a lot of trouble.

Well you have had two people say no so I would suggest you listen to them but the capture plate from your son's rig should fit if it is not bolted down.
Good luck I would not want my advice to cause a problem.
You could chain the slider to the front of the mount where it would not be able to move. That would also be a option.

Per the SG website
"A Capture Plate is a required component of the SuperGlide fifth wheel towing system"
There are 24 'specific' capture plates, 2 Multi-fit capture plates and 1 Universal Plate

That's the downside of the Superglide. Pinbox specific capture plate.
Didn't realize they had a multi-fit and a universal though, so maybe you could buy a universal plate and it would work.
If you don't have one, who knows how it will turn since the hitch will slide AND it will rotate with king pin.
If your 5er has the same pin box as your son's then yes, you can use his capture plate. Easily removed. But before you try, make sure you have same pin box, or his model will also work for yours.
