I too agree that supporting your local shop is best, but if you end up having to buy on-line, talk about it with your local shop because there will most likely be some assembly and adjustment involved once you get it. Letting your local shop handle that will help them with some business as well as keeping that relationship going. Most local shops are not going to be resentful of you purchasing on-line if they don't have what you need and can't get it in a reasonable time.

We were fortunate. We bought a new bike for our son early last summer. The only bikes the local shop we use had in his size started at over 4k and was definitely not in our budget. While we were there, someone called who had a bike reserved on layaway and cancelled the layaway and the bike was the exact bike our son was looking at so we were able to get it. We were in there later in the summer and they had a few bikes in the sub-2000 range, but very limited.

Also, check the manufacturer's website for bikes you are interested in. I looked at the Specialized (our preferred brand) site not long ago and they were starting to show stock on some of the bikes and sizes that had been unavailable previously.
