Thanksgiving 2020 I was laid off for the week. The company I work for there are only 6 of us that work for this company. The company I work for is a small saw mill.
Filed for unemployment. Unemployment asked me if I was laid off due to covid 19. I said no. I filed my unemployment and received my normal payment that I was eligible for.
Fast forward to the first 3 weeks of this year.
The first week not enough guys showed up to work so I was laid off. These last two weeks I was laid off because the company I work for is putting in a new saw. I go to file my unemployment for the first two weeks and I was paid more than what I am eligible for. It looks like unemployment gave me some covid 19 money along with my unemployment money.
I was on my unemployment benefits page. I am eligible to receive 335.00 a week. Unemployment paid me 539.00 for the week.

Re the COVID question
you need to speak with your employeer
If you were layed off it was likely for one of three reasons
normal seasonal change in custom (Business) NOT Covid related
Lack of lumber to cut. caused by a shortage brought about due to efforts to curb COVID (Related)
Lack of sales.. Same reason.

That's 2 out of 3 that are COVID related even if it is not a factor at your sawmill. It might be on either the supply or custom side.

The saw mill I work at is busy. Like I said before they put in a new saw. Unemployment is not taking any emails. I will ask the owner too see if he knows why I was paid more.

In NY unemployed is unemployed. Covid does not enter into it.You are asked if it was COVID related, but that is just for statistical data. You get the covid bonus no matter what.

I know of 2 cases where the employees quit. Reason they were scared of COVID. Can’t be denied unemployment benefits. Made more than actually working.

I was fired during COVID too, and I missed all my previous job offers. Luckily I have some savings, but they won't last forever.

From what I've read about the lumber industry, it seems that they are looking for workers, but can't find any. You say you are laid off from a sawmill, which at the moment is busy?

I am assuming (we all know about that) that his lay off is a result of a temporary mill shutdown while the new saw is being installed.
Industrial lay offs are pretty much a standard practice while a shop is retooling.
