Was watching spring training and see pine tar about 1/2 way up the bat....not near the bottom to help grip.....which I thought was the purpose of pine tar. What am I missing ?

It doesn't really serve a purpose above the grip area. Some players will have it further up the handle than where they grip so that they can reapply it to their hands from the untouched area during an at bat because it may lose some of its stickiness over time. By rule (MLB), it can't be more than 18 inches up the handle. If it is and the umpire notices or the other team complains, the batter has to use a different bat.

Ha! Had not seen that re-cap video in a long time. Forgot that Gaylord Perry (not stranger to "substances") carted off the evidence (bat) because they knew it was illegal.

Billy Martin... shrewd manager for pulling that ace out of his sleeve.
